KRK's or Beyer's

Post by Mysius » Sun Oct 18, 2009 7:19 pm

Hello all.

I have finally decided to take the plunge after mixing on some pretty shitty speakers for the last year. I will be buying some headphones or monitors over the next week and have narrowed down my search to the KRK RP5 G2 monitors that are around £250 and the Beyer DT 770 headphones that are £130.

Ideally it would be best to have both. But can only afford the one at the moment.

I produce on a laptop and prefer to mix at low level volumes.

Which one would be best?

I'd probably go with the monitors, if i were you...
That's what I did when I had to choose between my monitors and headphones. :)
Then I got my hadphones, but I rarely use them. Mostly stick to my monitors and occasionaly put the headphones on to check this and that.

Yeah cheers for the input.

Shortlisted the DT 770s on Deadly's recommendation in another thread.

Leaning towards the monitors as will complete the set up nicely

I have both of what you mention. If someone comes in here with a gun to my head and tells me to be quiet I will put the 770's on. Failing that, its krk all the way. The 770 compress the shit out of your sound. You'll level off three different sounds in the 770's, and then listen in the krk's, and one will sound 5 db quieter, and another 5db louder.

I can write wtih the 770's but I cannot mix a bit. No volume adjustments, no eq, no compression. Not nearly accurate enough. A lot of times audiophily shit is pretty hard to discern, or really similar sounding, but for this one, really, not even the same ball park, the monitors will give you a better picture (though watch your bass with the monitors - you can set up nodes that really do jack up your bass, that is for real too).

If someone by the name of Macc comes in here extolling the virtues of headphones, I will be forced to post some pictures of him smoking crack :k:

Thing is if the sale is coming, u might wanna wait, and buy the 6's or the 8's. I don't know for sure, but the 8's should obviate the need for a sub.

This really depends on the size of your room. I have a pretty small room and the 6's are more than enough. But if I were you I would definately go bigger then 5's, ofcourse this will cost some extra.

Before I got the sub, I had little clue as to what was going on below 60hz, and no clue what was going on at 50hz. U see Thelma and Louise? Remember when they drove off the cliff at the end, that was the 5's bass response. No fault of the krk's, its just such a small woofer.

Yeah I was going for the 5's cus i produce in a smallish room and have fucked my ears up in the past having a big bassy sub.

Was looking at mixing at low volumes pretty much all the time so it would lessen ear fatigue. Would i get any of the real low end at all with the 5's?

I remember Jack Sparrow recommended the ALESIS M1 ACTIVE MkII in his producer thread and they are around the same price so maybe it would be best going to a shop and checking those two out against each other at low volumes, see which is best along with the KRK 6's.

Don't get the alesis. Don't ever get anything alesis. I do not believe that any 5's will produce a realistic bass response in the 30-60 hz range.

^^ this man speaks the truth.
I was using the Alesis MK2 Actives for about 4 years and never understood why my stuff sounded like poo. I recently picked up the KRK VXT8 and there's a world of difference. The Alesis are dull sounding with zero definition, it's night and day now. (signed my first record after two weeks with the KRKs :))

I think my problem was more of the "where the fuck is my sub? let me put them on louder! WHERE IS IT?!!?" type. Image
