Sci-fi appreciation thread

Post by karmacazee » Tue Oct 20, 2009 2:52 pm

For years I was never really into it. Liked a few tv shows and whatnot, but as I get older the nerd within is blossoming quite nicely.

Just finished reading Alfred Bester's 'The Demolished Man' and 'The Star's My Destination'. Both seriously, seriously mind blowing books.

Now I'm reading 'Neuromancer' by William Gibson. Not too sure what's going on entirely, but I still quite like it.

Oh, and the new Stargate is quality, as was Battlestar Galactica.

Come on Sci-fi geeks, share with us your favourite books, tv shows and movies.

Alien

Event Horizon

District 9

I've never liked any Sci-Fi TV series', and can't say I've read any books. I can't stop reading science books though if that's any relevance. Some of the stuff out there is so mind blowingly amazing I just can't bring myself to read fiction now.

I'm game for Sci-Fi films though. There's a major lack of good ones though :(

The Takeshi Kovacs triology by Richard Morgan is a must read if you like hadboiled cyberpunk, one of the best I have read. The first one is Altered Carbon. Apart from a couple of films and things, I much prefer sci-fi as a novel.

You'll get into Neuromancer, suddenly everything makes sense and it kicks off. Also read the sequels Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive. Top stuff.

Dune is the best book I've ever read, and not because i read just a dozen
and the hallmark tv adaptation wasn't bad at all, much better than the miserable lynch version

wow I used to watch Stargate before 2000...they still make new episodes?

that was good.

Star Trek next generation and deep space nine were good.

District 9 is a bit overrated imo. but the different concept they took with it was good.

dune & p.k. dick!!! asimov's foundation series & a.c. clarke's space oddysseys are classics and should not be overlooked. robert anton wilson (my fav author after pkd) has some quasi-sci-fi stuff. check out his illuminatus! trilogy. i dont consider it sci fi, but some do. whatever it is, the world needs more of it.
