What was the obsession with happy fucking hardcore on those old tape packs. I've got loads of tape packs of my brothers from back then and nearly half of them have annoying pixie voices over happy fucking hardcore. GRRR

There was no distinction between happy hardcore and any other sort of hardcore then. You got happy and darker proto-jungle tunes in the same set. All the hooks and breaks were sped up and time-stretching hadn't come in yet so it sounded a bit mental. It made sense at the time.

16. But where I was, nobody I knew even ever heard of a rave, or even less probably knew what hardcore was...didn't find out about it till 94' when I on a whim decided to buy some "techno" and managed to buy "Jungle Warfare" by Darren Jay and Mickey Finn. Hooked ever since!!!

I used to like Holy Noise. They were a Dutch sort of nosebleed thing. They had a tune called 'Crucify Him' which I thought was the coolest thing ever at the time. I put it on recently and nearly laughed my bollocks off.

Anyways...I was 9 back then. That was actually the year my mum started doing the PR for the hardcore rave Fantazia so I got into the hardcore and rave scene pretty early. She had been raving for a few years before hand but that was when the scene was really blowing up from what I remember. Obviously I was too young to actually go raving myself but she used to get all the merchandise for free so always had all the new cd and tape packs etc. Good times...

Nice! I used to rinse Fantasia tapepacks with my best mate at school... her bedroom was practically wallpapered with flyers for Dreamscape, Helter Skelter and Fantasia raves that we wished we were old enough to go to. Still got a few of the tapepacks at my parents place somewhere actually...

Yeah my bedroom was exactly the same, floor to ceiling full of flyers. I used to go all the way to the local record shop, not for records but just so i could grab a handful of the best flyers and stick them to the walls and to copy the drawings of the big yellow smiley face with his raving gloves and glow sticks lol. I still have an old fantazia tshirt I wear to bed and had a matching poster which used to take pride of place on my wall...quite distubingly a close up of a mans nipple lol

I used to do the same thing. I'd save up my pocket money for Tape Packs (Vibealite/Fantazia/Dreamscape/Helter Skelter etc) But i mostly hung out in record shops so i could rinse out their stock of flyers. I actually got band from one shop. My room was covered, wish i hadn't used sellotape as i probably would have saved them all.
I also had a couple of Record Bags and a Vibealite Bomber Jacket.

I was 14 / 15 in 1991. Too young to go to raves but old enough to be buying records by The KLF.

The White Room was the first album I bought with my own money. I still listen to it today - albeit not on tape cassette.

I think that was one of the first tapes I'd ever bought. Finally got the CD a few months ago, I think it's aged very well! Some of the bits still sound quite current.

Also, I don't have your number so couldn't text you but me, marco, simon and trav are going for pizza on Goodge Street on Thursday night if you're on it?

Would be, but stuck in the US this week sorting out someone else's mess at the moment, instead of what I was here to do. Not having a good time.

Kay gives me hope that I can spin out this babyface thing for another few years. Got ID'd buying Cutter's Choice this weekend..!

I got ID'd buying a knife, at Dubpressure in Brighton, at Cafe 1001 in Shoreditch and few other places. I also got accused of plastic surgery by some crazy woman, haha.

Anyway, first raves I remember were in '95 and later. We used to hang around at the promenade and at the beach in Sopot until it got late and dark, and then we'd move on to Sfinks, one of the oldest clubs in Poland, still alive and running. No one would care for IDs back then. I wasn't even interested in this kind of music, I was a punker, going to gigs and sporting waist long dreads in all shades of red, haha. But it was a good place to hang out at, dance and survive til 7am. Good times.
