Serox -

You really with the Backlash crew? Are you a northern transplant who got lost down in London town? Or are you their southern satellite?

Only curious - cos I have played 2 Backlash shows, and I don't think we have met. I haven't talked to Don, Stu, or UEP for a while... hope they are all doing well.

I have never been into dub/reggae so wouldn't know of DJs/producers like him.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

I know of many names in different genres. I was not into this genre at any point in my life. I could list of not only artist names but genres that you prob have never even heard of so dont give it the biggun.

They have booked me a few times to play oldskool Hardcore Techno up there, nice bunch! They want me back to do an oldskool Acid set around NYE.

I am from South London tho.

you could get away with not doing spinbacks a lot in the techno scene, cos of the stupid ott build ups that you get, meaning you can just cut without leaving a noticable gap in the frequency range after the build ends
in dubstep i find a lot that when cutting from one tune to the other it just sounds a bit weird, even with correct eqing and stuff, maybe just cos the next tune has less hats or less of a punchy snare, spinning back the previous track makes the transition sound better imo
but djs that spinback every mix are v unimaginative and need to learn some new techniques

btw think a lot of people are getting confused over spinbacks and rewinds/reloads, 2 v different things

I think spinbacks can be used to create tension and keep the crowd hyped, granted some not very technical DJs do this a bit to much but if you're in a proper hype mix and doing 5-6 solid mixes and then you drop your biggest tune and spin back the previous into the incoming it can send people wild.

I think some people forget that DJing is about entertaining a group of people sometimes, don't always have to be technical to be good! I can admire a great DJ, whoever that black techno guy is whos got that 3 deck thing on youtube? hes a great DJ but if I saw him playout i'd fall asleep, theres 2 aspects to the craft of DJing.. ya know sometimes its nice to hear a great technical set where everything blends together and sometimes its nice for the Dj to show "THIS IS A NEW TUNE" and spin back into it - it keeps things interesting, I'd say its a bit like rewinds, use them wisely if you use it more than twice in a set you should think of new ways to mix.

Dont do spinbacks.

They are a last resort for a DJ who cannot mix. Learn to mix and leave that shit to sloppy djs or hip hop.
so most of the djs on rinse cant mix
hmmmmm

Sorry but you sound like you do not really understand what you are talking about.

OTT build ups in Techno? do you mean, Trance? I only have around 2000+ records and I would not say anything has any OTT buildups.

You can cut from one record to another with most genres and Dubstep is one the easiest. You must be cutting/chopping at the wrong point if it sounds weird. Try cutting onto a snare hit and it will sound spot on most of the time if you do it on the right bar.

Spinning back a record to make a transition sound better? are you on crack?

That is a very general statement and it did not come from me.

I dont tune into Rinse often but there has been a number of times I have heard some very slopping mixing. Some of the people I have heard on Rinse FM who stand out as a good DJs are Youngster, Oneman and Distance. Youngster is consistently impressive when I see him in many ways.

I have heard loads on there who have their fingers and thumbs all over the records when they are playing, that’s a big no no. Use the pitch. I have also heard so many people train wreck and have to spinback a record to try and hide it. That is only covering one horrible noise with another, weird. Don’t even get me start with the structure and flow of some DJs.

has anyone heard marcus nasty when he spins back the record but does it by exactly one bar so the tune is still in time when he plays it? Never heard anyone else do this

I remember seeing DJs like Easygroove doing this in the early 90s.

The tune may still be in time but it is not going to be on the right bar anymore so at the next 32nd its going to go out.

Spinbacks at the point of mix are often very good devices in the world of garage/grime/dubstep etc.

The sound of warped basslines being flung back often makes a very odd noise you can use creatively in your mix.

I have heard some nice wump's reversed slowly like this and it does sound nice, but it sounds better forward.

In my experience spinbacks are used to hide dodgy mixing or is done by people who are newish to mixing and think its 'cool'.

Nah.... Spinbacks can be done and sound good. If you are steady mixing in a track for say 2 minutes, then at the breakdown spinback the first record, and keep the new one playing, it can sound great and there is no beats wrecked and you have something to add to the transition. People do it all the time in Jungleand dubstep sets. When people pull the tune in their sets it's usually the crowd going off and wanting to hear it. You have to understand the reggae/clash culture where this all originated from to understand why people do it. Also realize that many of the fathers of dubstep have a reggae/jungle background so that would explain why it is so prevelant in this scene. Obviously people can abuse it, and that can be annoying (the few times I saw Andy C for instance) But overall, it can be used to great effect if done properly.
