I'd be really surprised if there was no dubstep on the list come the summer. Funny this post should go up cos I've just been marinating on whether to put an early bet on Skream and or/Kode 9 being nominated... thing is, the judges really do try and critique all the records based on quality not hype - the phrase 'does it work as an album?' is applied pretty much throughout, plus some of 'em won't have had the pleasure of hearing it in context (had the inside of their cheekbones rattled) and might find it hard to make the sonic leap.
If the label submits it, I reckon both have got a good chance. A Skream nomination would make for some interesting TV. Crack 'em, anyone?

sorry to come down on a negative cynical tip but i would happily bet against any dubstep getting anywhere near a nomination.Ewah wrote:I'd be really surprised if there was no dubstep on the list come the summer. this does however depend on who is selecting this year but i'm still very very doubtful.

It doesn't just depend on who's on the panel - there's a kind of Mercury mentality that applies whoever's judging. They definitely work on rock-style ideas of what a good album is, but definitely keep an open mind and ear to innovation. And dubstep's got that in spades, right?
Bit mad to be having a Mercury conversation in December. The list doesn't come out til the summer!

Sort of yes, but the idea is to promote good, interesting British music and that's gotta be alright. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. People love to hate the mercury but at least it's basically about the right things - good music.
Anyway, every day that passes makes broadsheets and magazines less relevant so it doesn't matter what they're hyping or finishing off. They've never really affected sales (record shops are much more influential, at least the ones still around) and most of it is just filling space. None of it really means anything. So, errrr, who's happy that Wonder's playing Cockney Violins on Rinse right now?

nah totally mate, was mainly just thinking about the careers of many past winners. prob came accross as unnecesarily negative.Ewah wrote:Sort of yes, but the idea is to promote good, interesting British music and that's gotta be alright. i'm not sure this gives me any more confidence. dizzee seemed to be a total blip and dubstep isn't even on the mainstream radar as much as dizzee was back then. i don't know. the awards are certainly rockist in their overall raison d'etre and the surprises always seem to be token nods rather than things that could really win.Ewah wrote:It doesn't just depend on who's on the panel - there's a kind of Mercury mentality that applies whoever's judging. Roni Size(, DJ die and them )won the mercury prize for "New Forms" album.boomnoise wrote: the awards are certainly rockist in their overall raison d'etre
Admittedly, DnB was definatly not a new phenomenon at that point, and Goldie's Timeless was already a little dated.
I think its too early for dubstep.
the label has to submit the album for it to be eligable, and i doubt many dubsteppers do.
Keysound Recordings, Rinse FM, http://www.blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com, sub, edge, bars, groove, swing...
