bingo, if you've already bought it then what's the problem.

they are not punishing the downloading, but the copyright infringement. if you bought the rights to owe a copy then no copyright infringement. at least it should be so.

yeah, i think so too. i guess if you have got solid arguments like you legally acquired the copyright of every item you've downloaded (even if you got the copyright at some other time and dled illegally), then it should stand. it all comes down to the arguments you use in court, leniency of the judge, how good your lawyer is to the prosecutions. i havent heard of a case yet where that's worked out. but it would be a justice served if you did win that kind of case...

If you already own it it's alright, but depends how you get it, if you get it off a torrent your sharing it while it downloads...

If you download it off a torrent, then someone was seeding it in the first place and you're just helping other people download faster. Now if you were to continue seeding the music after your download is finished, then that's a problem.

using a torrent is not illegal, it's about the content and the rights attached to it

Copyright law wasn't invented to persecute mr joe public, it came about to stop publishers of books and later music from releasing each others works and essentially gave them the sole right to do so. Unfortunately the courts have allowed this to become twisted and used against you and I. It's bollocks. There are enough people and enough money in the world for musicians to make a living and labels to make a profit even with illegal downloading. It is used only as an excuse for shite music not selling as people now don't have to stomach all that they are fed by the major labels.

There will always be enough people willing to pay for good music.

I'd say on the whole yes, even on an underground level which is what people probably wouldn't expect. Like I said, there will always be people willing to pay for quality music, just like there will always be people that will never want to pay for anything, regardless. I don't think it's such a bad thing for music not to be so much about commerce.

Is it ok to illegally download music?

Key word being illegal, I'd say no. Morally, depends on your morals. Legally, obviously if it's illegal it's not ok.

Hmmm...I'd say no, not because you're not entitled to it, but because of where that particular file might have come from, and also what it may contribute to. It depends largely on where you download it from I think. Like the torrent thing for example, because of the way torrents work, even as you download you are still uploading pieces of it to more people. I'd rip it myself as that's just what I prefer doing, or buy it again from an online store. I mean usually it's only .99/1.49 at most places i've seen anyway, price of a coke.. no big deal at all and you know you are getting the best quality right from the source. If it's from an album or EP but you only want 1 or 2 mp3's to play out or whatever, most stores let you buy individual mp3's from albums.

I dunno if it even matters if it's illegal or not, I mean we do things all the time that are illegal without caring. It's interesting to think about, personal morals at all. Ethics also definitely comes into play, so it would be interesting to hear more label owners' opinions on this subject.

Also I've seen a few labels lately offering digital copies with vinyl, similar to how some DVD's and Blu-Rays come with digital copies now. I think it's a good idea but might not be so easy to implement with vinyl, I mean you could also include a CD with a file but those always go missing, like with magazine cover CD's. How do those labels do it anyway? I figured you contacted them with a proof of purchase and they emailed it to you or something.

Yes they do.

I know of a few labels that are going to begin taking this approach, as well. I have an opinion on filesharing in general, but people will just say I'm a greedy label, so I won't bother. It all goes back to people feeling entitled. You aren't entitled.

That is all.
