If I were you id get FL studio and start rocking that. It’s cheap, you can start making noise really quick, and there’s a tone of video’s out there to help you out. It’s set up for dance music and comes with a lot of cool toys to mess with. Also get a copy of Reaper (it’s free) and experiment with that as well. Reaper will function a lot like the “big boy” sequencers (cubase, logic, ex) that a lot of producers switch to later in there life. Knowing tough’s two programs there wont be anything you can’t do. But all of the programs mentioned here are good and will get the job done.

Don’t let anyone tell you that this one DAW is better than the other, or that this one is the best or this one sucks, it’s all about what you do with it. I’ve seen people with the most expensive set-up’s and top of the line DAW’s that pump out shitty track after track. I’ve also seen people with the cheapest software and crapy computer pump out amazing tracks all day long. I was in the same boat as you when I started and I drove myself mad trying to find the “best DAW” out there…. I tried sooo many programs it made my head spin. I wish someone would have just told me to stick to one and REALY learn it inside and out instead of always trying to find the next best thing.

I've used flstudio for 10 years, gonna be 11 soon... You can make dope beats and do stuff that you can't do in any other daw. Period. But it is a toy because it can't do auto plugin delay compensation. I'm sorry, it achieves toy status for this reason. No other daw can't do this.

Try out reaper. It is essentially free. Reaper uses some weird paradigms for it's playlist or arrange page, I don't know what they call it. I don't like reaper, but that's only because of the way I've learned to work. But if you're just getting started it will make as little sense as all of the applications.

If you want an application that you can get started on, and use until the day you die in a fully professional sense, I think it's cubase for the pc. Try it out. You'll probably end up buying it.

Wish I had more experience with studio one. I tried a version that didn't support vst's. Ah, no.

and nowaysj breaks the code
any soft you start with will be great if you take the time to learn it
i used to use fl back when and before that cubase on atari and octamed on amiga and could run loops around fl on those and can to this day using cubase and renoise
it's all personal preference and raking the time to learn the basics of the soft and synthesis and mixing etc
test out the demos/warez where you have to and make a knowledagable investment in cash, time, and in reading material
patience is key too

if you're into breakcore, it'll pay to check out renoise. its cheap, sounds great, and has an amazing support system. The renoise forums are alive and well, and the developers take time to listen to user feedback. not just that but it's like $70. Learning Renoise initially takes a lot of dedication, but it's WELL worth it. i've tried a lot of software, and it's definitely the most intuitive and rewarding to use.

good luck man.

use more tahn one daw. it opens up.

i use ableton and reason. both are very different for my taste. and that's what it makes the combination interesting.

I reckon FL is your best bet...good for beginners.

If you wanna play about with some mixing softwear for free have a look at http://mixer.pointblanklondon.com/ the site has a mix machine to download with loads of loops/samples/effects etc to get you started with mixing some tracks. Once you've made a track you can upload it and the best rated track everymonth wins a free online production course!!

Hope thats a bit of help...

FL is a good investment as once you've paid for it, you get all updates FREE!!

Ableton do an LE version which, for a beginer, is more than you'll need and its only around the £40 (i think).

Do what other peeps have suggested and download the demo's first and have a play around. whats right for some might not be right for you so use what feels best.
