Do you consider this racism???

Post by faust.dtc » Fri Nov 06, 2009 12:14 pm

Do you consider this racist. Would you be offended by this? Im not trying to incite an arguement, im just curious on your views...
Pair demand apology over 'racist' dinner receipt

Image

A student and his girlfriend are outraged after being called a 'black couple' on their receipt by staff at a London pub.
Johnson Abraham, 24, and Roxanne Duhur, 21, claim they were the only couple dining when they received their bill at the Slug And Lettuce in Islington Green.

Mr Abraham, a mechanical engineering student from Dalston, was at the pub last month with Ms Duhur to celebrate her new job as an estate agent.

They ordered at the bar, without a table number, before going upstairs to find a seat. When they went to pay for the meal the comment 'upstairs blk couple' was printed on the bill.

Mr Abraham said: “I was outraged. They wouldn't have written 'white couple'. I do class it as racism. It spoiled what should have been a celebration.”

Slug And Lettuce area manager Nick O'Donnell said: “We often put a note on orders to help reduce the chances of it being sent to the wrong table. I agree the language was inappropriate. I apologise for the upset caused.”

Mr O'Donnell offered the couple a free meal with champagne, but Mr Abraham said: “I want an apology. The manager apologised but the waitress hasn't.”

To be honest, if they were the only black couple in the restaurant it's probably the best way of identifying them. Would a table of blondes get offended if they were noted down as such?

Black is a perfectly descriptive term... it's not like they said "Dirty fucking n*gger couple", is it?

They're just trying to get a bit of cash...

I don't think that's racist. If a black waiter wrote that they wouldn't be complaining. Maybe if there was more white people in there or whatever they just thought it was an easy way to remember them, doesn't cause any harm.

They just saw an opportunity and sold this story. I doubt they're offended at all.

But      @ southern fried chicken

EDIT: "claim they were the only couple dining when they received their bill at the Slug And Lettuce in Islington Gree"

Fucking bollocks. Only couple, central London pub at 9pm? Sure.

yes i do find that racist..... jokes.

I dont think its deliberate racisim, i think its a bad choice of words. I used to be a waiter and our tilling system made us write a note describing the diners and i often saw "table of africans" or "asians" written on the notes but it would never print on the recipt. Although i would never have called my co-workers racists, i would say that they could of chosen better words to desribe them like "rude bastards that keep saying the foods too cold or not cooked correctly" :D

Well they are a black couple..
Probably not the best system for a restaurant to have though.

Hmm would they get as mad over the word "couple" if they were really brother/sister?

Nobody would bat an eyelid if they were redheads and the receipt said 'ginger couple'. So I think it was just the easiest was of describing them. Perhaps a little bit daft to have put it on the receipt though...

at the end of the day, its just words. my mums side of the family are jewish and have heard people try to offend me by slating the jewish religion (even though i dont follow it) but its just words and doesnt even phase me.

If, though, they started kicking the shit out of me/family calling me jew, thats a different issue and THATS what i consider racist.

The old childhood saying comes to mind: Stick and stones may....... you know the rest

of course its not racist. how on earth is describing a black couple as a black couple racist? if i was the manager i'd tell them to fuck off! 'they wouldnt have said white couple' - well if there was only one white couple in the restaurant then yes actually they would have. people need to stop taking political correctness as a sensible way to think and harden up ffs.

that's absolutely ridiculous. things like this that do far more to damage race relations than i expect they realise. it just pisses people off and those that may have slightly right wing tendencies just end up getting pushed a little bit further in that direction

they are black and were described as being black. i asked my black mate about this and he literally laughed out loud. said 'well, i am black. just like if you came to africa you'd be 'the white guy upstairs'. i don't understand how being described by a fact such as your skin colour can be racist. now if someone described me as 'the guy with dirty/poo coloured skin' i would be offended'
