Without Paradox that Paradox Diss tune would never have been made - that was a work of comedy genius indeed although I do agree with Paradox that some of Pendulums music sounds like Kazoos (duh-da-da-duh-da-da) yea they've done plenty of polished turds but theres a world of idiots out there hungry for their next turd fix so fair play to them, laughing all the way the bank!

Alright then one Dev wouldnt hurt, I do agree he does amuse more than he infuriates and I dont really disagree with some of his views, just his approach. I would never want to see his live talk show... but I still appreciate his music.

No summary of the year in dubstep would be complete without the ever-expanding wobble side of the scene, recently hilariously and accurately renamed "brostep." In the UK, the wobble sound is now the default dubstep position for many fans, as the scene commands a increasing share of the Friday night/student/super club market. Its all about personal taste. Dubstep for me is about feeling it in the chest..not the ears.

Sorry to harp on on this topic, I know it's the most boring thing in music BUT I've been asked to do an article explaining to outsiders the debate going on about different sounds. There are so many newcomers who are really puzzled when they hear, say, Caspa and Breakage on Annie mac, then someone plays them Pinch and DFRNT and says 'this is dubstep'.

I've got loads of quotes from Caspa/Skream/Plastician etc on why the hard/uptempo stuff is good and successful, and some good stuff from Blackdown and Geiom on why they don't like it, but I haven't got anyone who's willing to go on record really slating it or saying 'it's not dubstep'. Can anyone think of anyone prominent in the scene who has already said something like this?

I'm not trying to whip up artificial divisions here, seriously, and anyone who knows my work knows I take a balanced view of these things and I'm definitely not anti-jump-up myself - but I can't show a realistic picture of the scene in 2009 unless I can show how strong some people's views are...

I think no one has said it because no one cares, or at least they realise how much of a cock they would seem to say something along those lines. I am sure people who identify with Dubstep really think it's important....something tells me producers who identify with MUSIC don't.

Dubstep is a style of music that is so open, and so varied.

Ok i've not read all the postss in this thread so i will say sorry in advance if this has already been said.

Make no mistake, i really think every music scene needs it's deeper side, to balance the movement as you will and i cant see why someone can't start (unless there already is one) a night devoted to that side of the sound? last time i checked, Renagade Hardware still sells out everytime and the Good Looking Records Monthly at Fabrics is always busy, even though D,N,B,s biggest label (pretty much) Playaz is in the room next door.

: Finally if you look back at any music scene, that scenes respected "timeless classics" are very rarely "Jump-Up" tunes, Jump-Up by nature is quite throw-away music, i will be surprised if the biggest wobble tracks today are still on heavy rotation this time next year. The deeper sound will alway last longer.

the more interesting and more importantly more authentic sound is being driven out by 18 year old students with names like crispin that listen to pendulum....many people begrudge this....but it is NOT being narrow minded

when done well harsher aggressive sounds are amazing ala vex'd, broken note, lone wolf and a few others....when it's done without ambition and just trying to be a cliched posturing anthem for people wanting to look cool and hard at the same time it's fucking dull to anyone that to be honest listens to a broader spectrum of music and is aware of how great it can be...so really the people being closed minded are the people raving about generic HARD lame bass music...

Piston I understand what you are saying but I think what you are describing is somewhat limited to where you live. I don't see it like that in the states. Plus I don't think cutting the scene in two is going create more variety in sets, quite the opposite I would guess!

Ultimately I think the discussion boils down to quality control and lack or good or veteran dj's. There are just so many DJ's around that got their start on dubstep and have been doing it for 3 years or less. 99% of the time you aren't going to get a quality set from them. DJing is an art and a craft and takes time to learn. Now computers do the beatmatching for you but as far as I know there still isn't a track selection plug in.

As far as quality control goes, get used to it! That is all I can say, digital music has brought this on and it is not going away. On the bright side I think it is even easier for a good hardworking dj or artist to distance themselves from the crowd as so many people are getting lazy and choosing their music from top 100 lists or choosing from whatever is listed on the rapid share sites.
