Its all about personal taste. Dubstep for me is about feeling it in the chest..not the ears.

I think its a shame most promotors are scared to book deeper artist these days though.

i'm one of those who feel that the very premise of chainsaw tearout tunes is flawed. it has nothing to do with execution, it will always be equally ridiculous. it's an instant cliché and it represents everything that repulses me in music.

like kode9, it takes me about 3 milliseconds to press 'stop' when i hear that bass sound in a tune. :)

my love for the scene ranges from the deep shit to the tearout.

i can easily go from loefah to excision and vaski etc.

currently im loving the dirt sound. I dont think there is anything wrong with it. the scene has grown and moved into different places. and its not like there isnt variety. when you got people like joker and then silkie and then excision or something. its all so different.

im loving the variety. you can go to a night and hear the most incredible range of sounds.....why piss and moan cos it all isnt to your taste. limiting yourself is fucking stupid.

Personally i really don't like this Brostep/midrange/tearout sound at all.

I'm just grateful people/labels like Scuba ( Speak/Negitive Massive release and his new EP is fantastic), Italtek ( the Mako EP is one of my highlights of 2009), DFRNT, Hessle Audio, Apple Pip, Hotflush and Hyper Dub are putting out quality music which is all very different.

I was talking to one of the guys at BM soho last week and he was telling me he and his mate are putting on a deep dubstep/DnB/techno night at Plastic People on wednesday (11.11.09), seems like a good line up I think it would be worth checking out.

Thanks all. Amazingly, though I know it seems like it doesn't do to go over the topic over and over, I think this thread - and the interviews I've done on this topic - has given me some fresh perspective. I won't have anything like enough space to cover it in what I'm writing in the mag, as it's only a short bit in the round-up of the year, but I will make sure and put more extensive quotes from the interviews etc up online somewhere once it's out.

So I can't have a good time listening to some good music? rather than going mental to disposable shit?
exactly.....joy orbison is wicked to dance about to and i was once in a pit seeing vex'd and when they dropped killing floor the place was buzzin...

also seen wobble artists with annoying kids wearing those mcdonalds sunglasses affecting cool moves in a cliched fashion
Your more than welcome to, ive had some amazing nights at FWD just taking in a deep Younsta set or even when i saw Pinch play a couple of times, And yes alot of the Jump-Up sound is throw away but that does not make it bad, there is nothing wrong with having a bit of fun in the studio? As i said where all more than aware that some of these type of tracks will not be around in 12 months time, but by then the next over the top wobble/synth bassline roller will be with us.

P.S i really really dont get the sunglasses thing, it's dark inside i dont think there needed but.......as long as they dont disturb me then each to there own 8)

Big Ups Joe - we *look forward* to seeing the article =)

Rather than suggesting that critism is itself inherantly negative, i'd be more worried about a scene where fans, producers, contributors, participants weren't free to express their viewpoint and feedback to those creating the music or putting on nights etc. After all, expressing your viewpoint is pretty much this forum's raison d'etre! if people want to critise the deeper stuff that's just as valid: there's tons of its that's very dull, not least the Burial clones you mention (i get sent at least one a month).

and joe, to your original question, i think it's a bit pointless looking for people to say 'wobble's not dubstep' as it clearly is. this whole debate emerged exactly because it is!
Large Up Blackdown. Freedom of expression is where its at =)

I completely agree with your last sentence. I am on record as being pro-hard-dubstep - in particular I think 'Sick As Sin' is one of my favourite records of recent months - and I personally think the flexibility that dubstep is showing is precisely what is allowing it to expand as incredibly as it is doing now. BUT the 'it's not dubstep' thing is also an opinion that is expressed often, and I want to be able to represent the full spectrum of the debate is all.

Sounds like people are equating the whole scene to their local experience, plenty of variety around these parts so it's hard for me to really empathise (sp?).

Aside from one or two misinformed douchebags, the bass music community here is pretty healthy. Some crews work together, some do their own thing, at the end of the day the sum of the parts is pretty awesome imo. I guess we got it good here in nyc!

as a famous and erudite Brostepper once said: "I dont believe in Brostep, I just believe in me."

sage words.

and dev paradox is the man. people get so worked up with what he says, and mainly because he's speaking the fucking truth, and he was there from day one. much respect to dev.

chainsaw's been around for years. the abrasive sound was never the issue. the issue is moderation, and staying away from formulas or using the sound because major producer X has used it, and you think that its your ticket to being heard as well..
