i just look at the cover. if it looks like it would have some funky drums or sounds then i grab it. i try to stay away from old rock records and such. if i see any classical or orchestra records then i snap them right the fuck up.

Disagree about the old rock records tho, there are some sick beats to be had if you are prepared to wade through tons of shite.

I find it essential, rooting in Vinyl Exchange for them £2.50 gems, I usually dig for particular sounds or a vibe; I have alot of Library Records like KPM, Film Scores usually 70's early 80's for orchestral and early experimental synth sounds, 70's Soul & Jazz (Stax, Columbia, MCA, Motown, Blue Note) for chopping moody sounds and chords, basically anything that I think I might be missing in a certain track I'm working on that I can't build on a synth. Plus it's good to just go and explore different music hands on in that environment rather than just a directed google or youtube search. Sometimes I might get inspiration or an idea for writing a track from just seeing a sick or interesting record sleeve or track name.

i crate dig like a mofo...but not for dubstep. who wants to pay 10 bucks for a vinyl of some tune that probably isn't even as good as something you can make yourself?

i only search for oldschool soul, rnb, jazz, hip hop or ethnic samples.

although used techno/trance can be quite useful for dubstep.. alot of it is ~140BPM.

I think if you're not going to crate dig, you might as well just use CD's. Thats one of the main reasons I stick to TT's (also scratching). Going through songs on the net and then just getting them (a lot for free; lets admit it) with a click seems to make DJ'ing lose it's romance for me.

Hey, I thought this was a crate digging thread!!!

Anyways, crate digging is a must. Been doing for 17 years and never stopped! And not just for samples, those are a natural byproduct. When I'm just chillin, I usually listen to a lot of jazz, funk, disco, rare groove and whathaveyou. You know when that certain song or riff is stuck in your head, it might be time to make a beat out of it.

Crate digging is one of my favorite hobbies, im sure it's contributed to my bad back. Soul & Jazz records mainly, but I sometimes buy something that just generally looks interesting. Sometimes I get spoken word records aswell, you can get some wicked samples off them. For example, I got a record which had aload of different recipies on it, Took out vocal samples and for each element of the song I dropped in, I would add in vocal samples like. 'now mix in some of...' then drop in a synth or some drums, etc..

I would give out Labels and years, But I'm a bit secretive about it.

Also, I love the weird looks I get when im digging in records, all the old people who try and shun me with looks because im 18 rocking an era hat in the classical section. Can't beat it.

Same here, I go once a week usually, or at least a couple of times a month. I buy records that look cool, and also records that look awful.. sometimes I like to find the worst looking ones I can and then buy those. You'd be surprised at some of the stuff i've found in there lol. I also have loads of 45's, a shop near me practically gives them away. Not really specific labels or years, but a lot of blues, jazz, classical, and eastern records. Probably the weirdest ones i've got are old black metal split EPs and similar. Some weird organs and pads on a lot of those.
