this would be good

that video was pretty decent, i keep meaning to try doing my drums as audio. not sure about that 'convert all your 16 bit samples to 24 bit' thing, is that right?!

Good idea, I have been obsessing about mixdown on my tunes recently, they just don't sound as big or bright as other tunes I have from this forum's producers ie daneeka and james. any tips?

cheers! well, write the tune with the mixdown in mind, i.e. try and fill the freq range bit by bit, layer by layer. keep it simple! when you come to mixdown, turn off all compressors & EQ & reset faders to zero then add the effects back in very carefully as you mix. bring the kick up so it peaks around -5db on the master then mix drums around that. don't use too much compression, and only then if you know what you are doing. have bass a bit quieter than you think you need it to be, and reference on a decent hi fi & also on headphones. etc

Thanks for the tips, I've been keeping the faders at zero and using vst gains etc to mix things down as per macc's advice in prod forum.

Can anyone recommend some drum sample packs? Ive had a look at vengeance but was wondering if there is anything comparable but a bit cheaper?

the theory is good, depending on the plug in of course. you're not making something out of nothing when you convert it, but it can mean it gets less distorted by the digital processing 'cos there are more bits to play with. even if the advantages are not always huge it can't be a bad habit to get into...
someone will see to it that the questions remain questions, getting lost amongst the crowd and the noise...

tip 1 - dont read that forum!!!!!

tip 2 - there are no rules!!! put delay on the bass drum and reverb on the sub, if it sounds good!!!

full of geeks who couldn't make an original beat if their life depended on it!!!!!

disclaimer macc is a cool guy!!!

If you want a bit of a guide to mixing down/compression etc.. then this vid might provide some help:

http://www.youtube.com/pointblankonline ... -CoFUvj9Q0

I know the company that made the vid also run online courses on mixingdown etc...obviously in way more detail.

As for producing house the same site has an edit from Rogue Element about making Electro House in Logic...again not that much detail but they have a course in it:

http://www.youtube.com/pointblankonline ... Vr0m_LpstE

Hope these help abit...

EZ all, I moderate the production forum and would LOVE to see some funky-based threads over there. Would definitely open up some of the new-to-production folks' eyes in terms of what can be accomplished in dance music.

also might save us from having endless questions about wobbles and chainsaw synths.

so please don't be shy! Come on in.

thx

i find the production forum hard to keep track of tbh, and there's too many 'which DAW is best' type questions for me...

All they seem talk about is wobbles and wanna cuss people off who as obvious questions are new to the artform.
Its a bit counterproductive for my liking.

to be honest, i'd recommend just sampling records that you like the sound of. i believe the vengeance sample packs are created like this anyway. if you have a lot of digital music (preferably original wavs, although you can get away with 320k mp3 i reckon) then trawl through and look for clean hits you can lift...
