Students & Dubstep

I was a student for 4 years in the South West...and I have to admit the majority of the student population did tend to only react to the jump up vibes and some DnB...however they were obviously all C***S and the same can be said for the majority of the UK's population who go clubbing every weekend and drink WKD while listening to shitty cheesy dance remixes of pop chart tunes....My expereince while at uni was that due to vast number of clueless morons who new nothing about good electronic music there was an undergorund scene of likeminded students putting on quality nights with a variety of good Dj's playing interesting music to a knowlegeable crowd who came to see something different from the usual student night shit. Even the cities clubs seem to be divided into those big horrible student clubs and the gsmaller, grimey rave basement type of clubs again playing quality music.

The fact is that you can't pigeon-hole all students as not knowing their shit and only liking the commercial side of things...I definitely did not have that experience at uni and know alot of others who'd say the same thing.

Ouch we're getting murdered here for being a bunch of clueless rookies. Yeah, most of the dubstep played in clubs is massively mainstream, but that's because 90% of people don't appreciate the real stuff. Personally, i'm in the 10% who do, and I love nothing better than a good filthy tune from excision or datsik, or any of the other boys

I've played there a few times already. I have been told Purple City by Joker is 'too depressing'. I have had endless Chase & Status requests. I have been told I should play more 'pop remixes'.

I am not generalising or stereotyping students or being prejudice towards them. I am simply trying to learn what they like. As far as I can tell they like happy vocals.

I think some of them just need to realise its dubstep not pubstep - they're listening to a proper DJ not disco Dave just let the DJ play the set they've planned and try to appreciate something you haven't heard a million times before!

Just a warning to some of these guys, radio cheese is one thing but think twice before you request Cookie Monsta or Borgore (it does happen!) as some DJs might (understandably) take offense to those sort of requests.

by the same token would some1 that plays borgore n cookie monsta be offended if you asked for some pangea or joy orbison?

have played at my students union few times mostly just to warm up cos i know pple rnt into it (girls askin 'do u have any rnb?' etc).

u dont have to play shit music or bare tearout tracks if u dont want to. maybe find some decent remixes of 'pop' tunes, e.g. widdlers remix of day & night etc. last time i played a lot more pple were feelin wot i was playin n i wasnt playin many manic tunes so think trends r changin a bit.

some of the remixs pple post in the dubs forum might help. think ur right tho 'happy vocals' is wot they (generally) want.

at these student nights, i'd much rather spin an hours worth of garage and uk funky which all students seem to love than drop dubstep that i don't even like.

also to the guy who suggested the dub and run things, dub and run are 16 bit

I'm not going to play anything I don't like, well maybe a few bits I won't be so keen on. I don't know / own enough Garage or UK Funky to play that.

Probably not - I'm sure they know what they're playing is wrong and deep down they're ashamed of themselves for liking such utter shit!

The event has been cancelled after 6 weeks. The promoter for the night has been told by the venue to cancel it. It was only room 3 anyway.

This thread was just my last ditch attempt to get our room busier but I don't have a chance now.

Shame.
