I've really been feeling alot of Cumbia....

In particular the stuff from ZZK and this new comp on DJ /Rupture's SOOT called "Nueva Cumbia" from Buenos Aires-

Sounds a lot like some music which some guys in Italy have been doing for years. If you ever heard about "Cosmic Disco" and/or music and mixes by Daniele Baldelli you will know what I'm talking about. They call it "Afro". It can share the main rhythmical structure and patterns with cumbia and the tempo (most of it is faster tho) Some of it is awful, due to ultra-cheesey and cliche-esq stylings. Some of it is faster and its a mixture of various "world music" influeces. Every dj in the scene tries to retain a particular style: some are more "latin" influenced, some are more "funk" influenced. There are some dubbed out / deeper tunes circulating in this micro-scene which are really good tho!

I havn't really heard a similarity between most of the cosmic disco stuff and the cumbia stuff... any particular mixes or tracks where your hearing the similarities?

cumbia is the shit! some of the new stuff light years ahead of ukfunky if u ask me, these cumbia crews down in mexico are for real too. huge soundsytems, BIG parties, tons of girls, everyones dancing! love it
