Are you sneaker heads good at identifying fakes?

Post by basser » Thu Nov 12, 2009 11:08 pm

I bought some Dunks on eBay from a fairly small time seller...they arrived as the wrong size to start with, which is just retarded.

On taking a closer look, I reckon they could be fake...a massive lack of info about them online being one reason.

What stuff can I look for on them as "proof"? The tongue is lacking a some kind of UPC code number that my Blazers and Max's have...

this is the problem with nike fakes. the only real way to tell for sure if they're fake is to wash them. of course the problem then is you can't return them. when you wash real nikes, the band around the side of the sole doesn't come off. on fakes after washing, the band comes off immediately, and the leather with start flaking and falling apart.

I opened a dispute with PayPal, then the seller replied being all apologetic and offering to ship me a fair of actual size 10s (i.e. I re-sell the 7s I have)

Anyway, pics:

look real.

I wouldn't of thought that the manufacturers of fakes would bother making such a distinctive shoe that wouldn't be to everyone's tastes...

What you want to look for is bad stitching and undercut panels, and wrongly positioned art...... I've got some fake against real pics so you can see what I mean (different shoes though.)

Just look for shoddy workmanship really. If they're good fakes then obviously this is gonna be hard/impossible to say.

A general rule is; if you pay £40 for a pair of kicks that are usually £100+ then they are fake. Even second hand rare or collectors kicks retain their value. No one would sell valuable shoes for peanuts.

What dunks are they supposed to be? If you know your editions u wont get parred. Just google the edition and compare to the real version (stitching, colourway etc)

Allow buying dunks/blazers/AF1's without knowing the edition (unless they all white/ all black etc)

edit: they are 'Custom Flickr's'.

Google 'dunk high custom flickr' and u will see bare shady suppliers in the search results (ie. if the web address is www.nikedunksale.com they are prob fake). I cldnt find one reputable place selling them- even out of stock.

Also, know your point of sale. Allow Ebay.

Ebay is brilliant for finding deadstock and second hand trainers but not nike cus theres so many fakes because so many ratty little kids cant tell the difference.

Adidas, vintage trainers are really hard to find anywhere else. Luckily, most people who buy the rarer end of Adidas Originals (but not superstars and that shit) know their stuff.

Cheers guys...Dreamizm kinda confirmed what I was thinking: only places selling 'em look dodgy as fuck.

I probably wouldn't have given a shit if they'd been the right size, but now I just wanna tear the seller a new one for being such a fucking mong.
