I mean, compared to some of the greatist pop hits which are catchy and soulful, classical & jazz music, which actually takes skill to play, or metal which has raw energy.

For me, dubstep has gone from being dubby in the early days, to wobbly, then horribly screechy, and now bitcrushed robotic.

There seems to be a lack of humour in bass music generally. Tunes are either deep ambient or jump up. And if there are ever any vocals, it's always that crap 15 year old toy soldiers spout about 'slewing man wit mi nine'... (very uninspiring)

Maybe I should dig deeper, or better, take a long break from this shit?

and humour.....whenever I hear/read Rusko hate I always think 'here's clearing having a big laugh'

especially with songs like Paper bag that shit is mad jokes.

There's lots of shit dubstep in my opinion, and lots of mediocre boring "this is going nowhere" dubstep, but some really fucking good dubstep too. Unfortunately, the two first categories seems to be the two dominating at the moment, it just seems to easy to make something even remotely catchy. I mean, one of the most hyped tracks of the year, 'Hyph Mongo', well, it just isn't really that great, it lacks progression and an overall interesting sound, everything in it seems like its been done before, and there's absolutely nothing special about the means of production, in my opinion. The formula is getting rigid and boring, and the ones that are making the fresh good sounding stuff are the ones not afraid to walk a new path and incorporate a more personal style or perspective on it. It hasn't reached its peak yet though, dubstep will probably seriously get into the mainstream at some point, kinda like trance did, and become utter shit at some point, but the really good producers will have moved on to something nice and fresh anyway.

That's one man's opinion. I don't mean to be disrespecting anyone, 'Hyph Mongo' was just an example, it's not a bad track, it just isn't that good.

Your tune is good and I do like it, but regarding the point I'm trying to make, it still ain't reaching that elevated status that the non dubstep classics have achieved.

Same goes for Hyph Mongo

So far today, I've been listening to Michael Jackson, Slipknot, loads of cheesy po(o)p from the 80ies and 90ies, Nirvana, a fair dollop of hip house, Massive Attack, Altern 8, Diane Warwick and Elvis...

I've grown up listening to a steady diet of hip hop, d'n'b and dance music, but give me MJ today over all of dubstep for pure emotion and creativity!

Man, I'm thinking metalstep, dub ballads and real orchestras instead of poxy pads and bitcrushed bollox...

Maybe that's where the pioneers of tomorrow will take it? (I hope)

I think Hyph Mngo was more about the vibes. that's just me. I thought it was vaguely reminiscent of cheese wiz the first time around. but I really like it now

Just digging for new artists i haven't previously heard of seems to pay off big time when i think like this. Also got to remind yourself of the existance of the many artists such as Faib, Indigo, Burial, Pinch etc. that take a more inspirationally artistic approach to expression in music. The filthy bitchrushed stuff can still definitely grab my attention when i'm in the mood though.

Defo a vibes tunes, pretty mellow.

But in ten years, I'm unsure I'll still be feeling it as I am today??

Have been listening to a lot of Burial recently. I guess it's more because it is chilled like the old trance used to be...?

but I think it's natural for your life to rotate around certain sounds for a period of time, however long that may be. I was on hip-hop for tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime and then downtempo and nu jazz came into the mix. and then for a time I was all about deep house.

had d'n'b periods for awhile. I had a MASSIVE afrobeat period.

I think it's good. you become enctrenched in a sound....the good thing about dubstep is that there's this connection with all bass music. so by default for me anyway, I just started checkin out all sorts of shit.

same with deep house...cuz a that got into minimal tech and tech house etc etc. and it from downtempo/nu jazz...where I wanted that mordern jazzy shit that made me go to deep house.

because of being addicted to afrobeat I was searching out other 1920s highlife etc etc etc.

it never ends.

Yea I guess it ain't that dubstep (or any music) isn't shit per se, but my ear for music is changing as you say.

Like you, I've been through serious 'periods' listening to certain genres, groups or even individual songs.

Time to spread my wings again I guess!
