Re: Is dubstep actually just a bit shit...

Post by nousd » Thu Nov 19, 2009 6:45 am

I almost gave it away earlier this year
(when i got arrested and deported..... )
cos it was getting repetitive & boring
but then i thought about 05 to 07
and reminded myself of how exceptional a time it was;
that in normal times you've gotta wade thru piles of steaming shit
to find anything worth listening to.

So i decided to hang in there & cratedig for stuff missed like hayze99
& keep open-minded, waiting for the pearlers & the next step.
After all, there's NO music as good as GOOD dubstep
and NO scene as FRIENDLY.

hardly listen to dubstep unless I make it or DJ it or get sent tunes by other producers, keeps it fresh for me although I still feel there is a lot of shit to digg through. :W:

Yeah my stuff is ambient but I have been making that sound since 06 I ain't going to change cause more people are making it these days though thats probably why no one knows who I am in the grand scheme of things hahaha

"bitcrushed robotic"

There's loads of dubstep that does sound like this but it doesn't matter. There's just as much that doesn't.

You've got to look at the labels who are trying to do something interesting with 140ish bass music, rather than just making formulaic dancefloor fodder for fuckheads. Hyperdub, Planet Mu, Tectonic, Hessle Audio, Deep Medi, 3024, Punch Drunk, Soul Jazz, Hotflush etc. Plenty of others too.

Don't go anywhere near dubstep download charts. As with any genre, a lot of the stuff that sells well is barely recognisable as music made by human beings. Orwell called it prolefeed.

If you have already investigated the above take a break from dubstep and listen to something else. Life's too short to listen to shit music.

i started off listening to country & jazz(my parents are rednecks & i play jazz as a little kid)

then as i realized most of it is crap i moved completely to pop, rock, hiphop(13-16 years old)

as i realized most of that was crap i moved completely to underground hiphop, metal & house/trance(16-19 years old)

as i realized most of that sucked i moved into drum & bass, idm, reggae, ambient, downbeat(19-22 years old)

then i realized most of that was shite as well...
.
.
.
at this point i pretty much went back & listened to everything i had every liked.

my parent's vinyls, the mixtapes i made as a kid, cds purchased over the years...

after copious amounts of marijuana i slowly began to realize that it all fit together perfectly!
.
.
.
Johnny Cash, James Brown, mf Doom, Slugabed, Mike Patton, Bowie, Peter Tosh, Vivaldi, Sun Ra, etc, etc...

they all get equal time in my headphones..."other music" is my favorite forum here ;)

there is good & bad of everything...find what you love...then find something else you love...then something else!

Quite right too. There are so many people producing all genres, that it's really just laziness that leads to listening to anything you don't like.

To be honest i view dubstep as a music experience, i love to mix it, getting stoned, letting the bass do funny things with my head and other such stuff.

On a big system i think its really intense, a real deep or just powerful thing to hear, often bringing tears to my eyes, haha. I acknowledge the great amount of skill required to make a decent tune, and i enjoy dubstep on a huge scale, seriously its intense.

BUT, i sometimes get so immersed in the genre i forget just how great and REAL other music is. Yeah dubstep is brilliant, but everybody needs variety, like right now for instance im listening to the beatles, undisputely much, much more talented and influencial than 'dubstep' will ever be. just full stop.

I listen to a massive selection of music, from slipknot to MJ, i just LOVE music.. so many songs and bands that take you back to that certain place, i cant describe it but different music takes me back to different times in my life, bringing a massive amount of differeent emotions. sometimes great, sometimes nostalgic and sometimes depressing.

So yeah, dubstep is great, it provides much happiness, but really, is it of any significance in the scale of things?

just consider how deep and meaningful many songs out there are, yes dubstep is great, but there is so so much more

Futures man, so much innovation and good music around atm. In a lot more genres than just dubstep too. Search about as other people have said.

I love their guitar style..! :)

Are there any other bands out there with a similar style that I should check out?

#If they suck, which rock/metal/guitary groups do you recommend I listen to instead?

I honestly don't know much about that side of music...

ii get bored of it too, all the amatuer stuff is so crap, n some of the wobble that producrs like rusko make pisses me off... papaer bag is so shit! it could have destroyed dubstep for me. all the old original stuff is for me, old mixes etc... wen ever i go to an event, mainly croydub, it restores it for me. imo its cos they play deep/mesterious dubstep, its dark n dirty n on a system u feel the physicality of the music, compared to the dub police stuff which is all chainsaw/rave i dont no how to describe it... all of that becomes repetitive n boring where as the dark stuff keeps me hooked.
