That's just down to the speed of your computer / number of samples I think. Browsing from the NNXT/NN19/Redrum doesn't really vary much.

Try organizing your samples instead of having them all in C:\
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

this, i've had to wait up to 5 minutes to open a sample pack before, just have them in folder's no bigger than 100 wav samples in each and it should be pretty fast

Well, I usually use a "rippingsoftware" (I use Easy Hi-q recorder - ist not the smoothest program though, but it wokrs for me) then edit the sample in soundforge (i.e. I cut out the parts that i want to use) then save as .wav and load into redrum. There are probaly better ways to do this in reason, but it works for me...

ok i understand everything you said guys, cool tips

but how to make reason not to sound like shit?

i mean, the output quality is really shitty isnt it? or am i just too bad on eq'ing and mixing..

well it sounds shit to me anyway.. rewiring to ableton doesnt seem to do much really

What bit rate ect. are you exporting at? What soundcard are you using?

i'm exporting at 48 k, 24 bit. my soundcard is my laptops onboard 5.1 though
but does the type of sound card really affect the sound as long as it supports ASIO?

If you bounced out of reason, then surely you will still have the same problems?

I mean, putting a shit sounding wav into ableton does not make it sound awesome.

Spot on Baz, how on earth does what work out...? what does would ableton make if your still using the same wave files from reason? Still the same file so therefore if its "shit" from the beginning ableton is not going to magically make it all work.

Thats like having a "shit" kick sample and bringing it into ableton will all of a sudden it sound in all fullness? how does that work!
It seems it me you want to think reason is "shit" and think ableton is better, maybe its the inability to use reason to a efficient level.
A brand new song!

I agree with you fully that Reason is limited in many, many ways. Yet it is useful, fun and easy to sketch out ideas quickly. It can be used to make some pretty decent sounding music using nothing but the in built content.

I think prior to Reason 4, the mix bus used a different algorthm or less bits???

However, before writing off Reason as wasteware, I'd look in detail at your mixing levels, compression settings and EQs.

------------------------------------------

One thing to consider is whether the output is clipping. If it is, you'll see the red clip light turn on in the bottom left hand corner every time the audio volume is over 0dB.

Related to this, using have heavy compression or limiting on your master bus may cause distortion. Try resetting the master volume control to -3dB or even -6dB and switching off any compressors & limiters placed across the master output. If the bounced audio is too quiet, normalise the audio in a wave editor back up to 0dB. This will ensure that no distortion occurs due to clipping.

You may be hearing smearing caused by phase cancellation between different elements of the mix sharing the same frequency content. When two sounds with the same frequency content are summed together, the doubled frequency content rises in volume. It may be that there are small overlaps of similar frequency content clipping and causing the entire file to sound distorted. You can remedy this by using a parametric eq and lowering the volume of the offending frequency ranges.

As others have mentioned above, if you are using poor quality samples to begin with, no program is capable if improving them to perfection.

Lots to think about and work through. I'd definately try bouncing out at a volume low enough to guarantee that the audio isn't clipping. I'm certain you'll find the sound quality vastly improved! :)

yeah hi there guys i must say its all about love, i wasnt hating on reason and yes some of the things go well with it and i used it for many productions before. thing is, i heard there is a problem in the reasons mixer and lack of some kind of sparkle, but yeah i could tweak it out to be cool, but its the actual sound i wasnt 100% satisfied with. so putting it track by track (in total of around 20) in ableton with ability to have a vst or couple above that made it ok as i had better control on the actual sound of it. what i mean is filter sounding like reasons filter wasnt enough. so was the reverb. maybe i'm not that all geeky about reason cuz i know it put out good sounds. i also will try not to switch from it in a long time because of its architecture and crazy workflow which works great for me and its also good for quick sketching. but its also a great idea to use some more tools afterwards to tweak it up a little bit making it to sound almost a complete copy of what it was in the head i mean, liking it.
thanks for your support

yeah and there was no clipping etc, plenty of headroom also and shit, high pass filters, low pass filters, imagers, paning, eq'ing shit out. as i said i was probably just lacking some tools to give the tracks that special colour and a bit of saturation.. and i try not to use samples quite often, synths work and all, maybe i'll post the bounces after, maybe not
