Kryptic Minds Growls?
How to do they make these growls. They sound sooo good. I have tried making a Reese Bassline then putting effects like a Formant Filter, Distortion etc. but they never sound like a proper growl.
Can anyone help?

Someone must have a rough idea.

filter cutoff controlled by short attack envelope
a touch of resonance, a little distortion and short reverb

cool thanks, what good synths would you recommend?kp mike wrote:filter cutoff controlled by short attack envelope

dont just limit yourself to using reesey noises, the first one sounds like it has some square/pulse action in there. then its just your standard twisted d+b bass style processing - distortion, filters and resampling. also try using bandpass filters instead of lowpass, or even combinations of different filters. one thing i like to do sometimes is grossly over-distort a sound then sample it and bp filter it then put a more sensible amount of distortion on it. also try different distortions, they all have different characters - if you have access to some try using actual guitar pedals, they work a treat. also the notes you are playing massively affect the timbre of the sound.

best way is 2 fart down a rolled up newspaper, Pitch it down a few tones (depending on what you had 4 tea the night before)
High attack & a bit of resonance, tad of distortion (again, depending on what you had for tea the night before)
usually works for me

Cool, cheers for the help. Just another quick question:gravity wrote:dont just limit yourself to using reesey noises, the first one sounds like it has some square/pulse action in there. then its just your standard twisted d+b bass style processing - distortion, filters and resampling. also try using bandpass filters instead of lowpass, or even combinations of different filters. one thing i like to do sometimes is grossly over-distort a sound then sample it and bp filter it then put a more sensible amount of distortion on it. also try different distortions, they all have different characters - if you have access to some try using actual guitar pedals, they work a treat. also the notes you are playing massively affect the timbre of the sound.
How do you resample?

Do you just record the sound then put it back through and apply more effects?

Re: Kryptic Minds Growls?
kp mike, right on with the response. always interested in this type of sound, gonna play with it a bit more tomorrow once i get back to my main comp. i use reason and a host so id gladly upload a patch if/when etc etc.
errr a bit on the resampling notion... atleast in reason... sorry if this isnt helpful. its turkey day, ive had some wine, whatever.
make a combi, throw in a mixer (i prefer the 14 as you can have 4 send channels), along with your synth of choice and your sampler of choice. i use thor and nn19.
route them through a spider to go through the same FX chain. (both inputs routed into the one output) then forget about the sampler, and synth up your bass.
once you have a sound you like, loop that particular section you wish to resample or edit more within the sequencer, file export loop i believe it is. (sorry not at comp right now!!)
Turn off all your oscillators in the thor, load up your wav into the sampler. (i use the nn19 for ease of automation, or the rex for larger files. others use the nnxt. all personal opinion/choice
blam all the note data you have for the combi is now triggered from the sampler, still the same sound, but you can alter it even more.
Now you can use the same FX chain again, more filter motion, more distortion etc. but you can also use the thor as a mod for cv data. inside the mod box on the thor you can route your LFOs to CV outputs, so you can affect multiple filters with the same LFO, or even get more creative to your hearts extent. You can split the CV outputs of the two LFOs of the thor using spiders, and still have two channels open for mod output. or you can add more oscillators still to the orginal sound by adding more to the thor and mixing alongside your original sound.
There is so much crazy shit you can do within reason at this point, which is the reason (no pun) i love it. route your sample as carrier and mod it with the vocoder input of the thor with a new sound youve made and play with the results. Or once you have a few samplers playing the modulated layers, sidechain them to one another creatively to add even more movement. i dunno the routing possibilities are ridiculous! just do something.
i just like this setup as it simplifies all the routing. You can resample on the fly, but also add more creativity to the original as youll have the synth and sampler midi data all routed to the same output. you can layer, go crazy with routing, ????? profit. you can endlessly layer and modulate until you have something that tickles your fancy. if you are into layering, you may want to consider adding a few more samplers from the get go, so the routing is all done and doesnt conflict with the creative process.
ahh one more thing, you can route audio input through thors filters, so it may behoove you to route the sampler of choice into thors filters again. just depends on what you are doing... i find thors filters preferable to automating the stand alone FX filter. Just my 02 though!
Hope this helps someone! Sorry for the Turkey Day wine spew.

Re: Kryptic Minds Growls?
sounds to me like a short lp filter sweep on a distorted bass stab with a delay tale.
