I just watched the first of these videos. To be honest my first response was this guy is nuts but the more i think about it the more it resonates with me.hackman wrote:

Now I still think hes mostly talking complete drivel (I'm always willing to be proven wrong) but I feel there's something in this 2012 thing...now i doubt we will see some kind of global cataclysm or even if the year 2012 has any specific relevance but i get the clear impression that something is going on...its all coming to a head. Be it global warming, centralization of government, economic meltdown, stripping of civil liberties.... we are being corralled..for some nefarious purpose, no doubt.

Erm, well since about 1700, the British Government. The average standard of living in Britain was atrocious before we sorted properly democratic rule out. Take away centralised government and services (NHS, Education, Social Security, Transport, Defence.....) and we're left with a big mess of people doing those things solely for profit... doesn't strike me as better in the slightest.dreamizm wrote:Are you nuts? Tear down borders, make us all equal... seems a good idea to me. I've always thought the opponents would be better off getting involved and making sure that any world government was built in the interests of the people rather than trying to cut themselves off from something that is incredibly likely to happen in the long term.
Humans do band together over time, it seems natural behaviour. Call it empire building, alliance or 'special relationships'.... we all get closer in the end.
Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Devolving power and decision-making to local communities and LA's is the only way forward and this is what the climate change lobby and (most) spiritually-enlighted are pushing for. Interestingly David Cameron is basing a lot of his policies on this belief as well.
I like government, it just needs to be kept in check by the people. Opting out and saying you'll have nothing to do with it gives them license to do whatever they want.
Also - you really think something like Climate Change is best handled by Local Authorities? That's mental... it needs coordinated global action, not a bunch of village committees talking about not littering their cricket pitches.

There is a big difference between democracy and centralised/totalitarian govt
OBVIOUSLY we need some form of mandate/cohesion at a global level where targets can be set but a new way of living can only be established at local level (sustainable economies with low carbon transport/locally sourced food etc) if it's going to last and be anyway in keeping with the needs of the people at hand.
Imagine an unaccountable group of people thousands of miles away making decisions that affect you and your family. Have you read any Kafka?? Plus culturally the effects would be catastrophic - we'd become a generic whitewashed race of zombies
Anyway dont wana take this thread off-topic. Lets' agree to disagree

someone hacked into a high up government email account and it contained info on the tax laws they were planning and other shady shit, most likely how they are covering it all up.yooamatwa wrote:Well yes clearly Global warming is a tax scam....how else will the EU make more money?
Don't be so quick to dismiss the idea. Why do we need taxes in the first place? We are required to give our hard earned money to someone who doesn't own us, if not we face being made slaves in a world where no one owns ANYTHING.

Hah sorry prev post wasn't that clear. I'm not dismissing it...Global warming is a huge cash cow those troughing greedy stnuc are salivating at the idea of a green tax... I heard the other day they are thinking about personal carbon credits .... say you have 100 per year every time you drive your car you loose a credit...or fly on a plane you lose 10.. when there gone...tough shit.
I'm sure this wont apply to ruling classes though... i also hear that if you manage to save up 1000 points our gracious leaders will present you with one of these

sorry off topic here

I think we largely agree actually, but perhaps you're making an assumption that a global government would necessarily be unaccountable, all-powerful and totalitarian? I can't imagine the people of the world, especially those in democratised countries, accepting that.dreamizm wrote:Haha u are either purposely misinterpreting me or not hearing a word im sayinmagma wrote:Erm, well since about 1700, the British Government. As for the zombie stuff - given the cultural differences that still manage to exist in, say, Britain - afterall, we are "one people under one government", I think the world would manage to hold onto its local culture well enough on its own. It's companies more than governments that I worry about degrading culture -Ziauddin Sardar had a nice term for it - "Coca-Colanisation".
As an aside, I wish people would talk with "could" rather than "would".
"Plus culturally the effects would be catastrophic - we'd become a generic whitewashed race of zombies "
"Plus culturally the effects could be catastrophic"
Unless you've got a crystal ball, we're all guessing.... and opinions are opinions, neither of us are "nuts" for disagreeing on things like this.

Re: Aliens...OH NO
So... I can't help but get the feeling this is all a bit X-files. Like literally, the main story arc of the X-files.
Was Chris Carter, or his writers, into all the project camelot stuff?
