akai is quickly becoming the king of the midi market, just a bit pricey still
def the controller of choice atm though
if you just need keys and have space see if you can track down a yamaha kx8
discontinued so they go for like 300$ and full 88 key weighted
only real feature it's missing is transpose which you can do in software as a workaround
vs mpk88 which is like 800$

What's the MPK like compared to the Axiom49? Really worth the extra £100+?

axiom pro 49 is only one to contend with mpk

What's the difference? No research but i always though the Pro was purely the white version of the standard.

mpr,a; axiom no velocity sensitive pads
pro version has pads that are nice and presetup with hypercontrol for pro tools and logic mainly

I've been using a MPK49 for a year and a half and I love it! It feels really solid and the keys feel good. Not really a fan of the pads but they are usable, but even without the pads this would still be a dope midi controller.

A friend of me got about 3 months ago, when he wanted to "learn to produce", either way, I don't like it.

The keys are great, the buttons for play, stop, record are great, faders are great, but DAMN those pads suck... you have to press it so hard, that it bends the alluminium (spelling?) that the keyboard is made of.

I recommend the Axiom, even though I don't own it... I played with it in the store a few times and I really like it.

just to add more weight to whats been said. Have the mpk49 love it, use the transport, faders, knobs, the ARP, the NOTE REPEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hell yeah, just straight up, I don't use the pads at all. They totally suck, I too have to press so hard that the mpk boughs in the middle. Not all units are that bad, but the nuakai qc is crapptastic, so they vary from unusable to very very bad. It's a shame, I had to pick up a padKontrol which has awesome pads, like them better than mpc2500 pads, but probably not as much as mpc4000 pads. But I'm using a lot of desk space for a keyboard and pads, but whatever, u do what you have to.

Would definitely pass on anything m-audio related, across the board.

I'm not at mine so correct me if I'm wrong but when you have it held down and hold a pad down it repeats/stutters the sound. You can change the timings too 1/16, 1/8 etc.

Don't understand peoples problems with the pads, personally think they're fine. You don't have to hit 'em that hard if you have the full velocity button activated to the left of the pads.

I had one of these bad boys used it for about a year, Only sold it due to getting a Virus Ti. The Pads are fine and the keys feel like quality.
But its the note repeat and arp that blew my mind, you can control a bass hit synced with the note repeat on controling the rate aswell as the swing and quantize.

Note repeat is like a cornerstone of hip hop, once you know what it does, you'll start to hear it everywhere. It's an mpc thing. Super easy way to do bouncy hats - just set your 1/16ths or whatever and pulse the pressure on the pad, and you'll get on time but bouncing hats.

Re the pads. The pads are bad across the board, but some just don't really work. Mine are like that. Even with full velocity on, if I hit a pad, it won't trigger if I stand up and press it with both thumbs it will probably trigger but the mpk will bend in the middle. 6'2" 240lbs, I can press hard.
