Speaker system advice required

Hello all,
I'm looking at investing in a new set of speakers but am no expert on what to be looking for. I basically just want to upgrade from a standard hi-fi set up in order to attain better sound quality, bass depth and volume range for the purposes of both just listening as well as for mixing. I don't own an amp so will be looking for active speakers and have thus far looked at the Tapco S-8 and the KRK Rokit 8. Any reccomendations would be much appreciated, as well as any potential issues I may have with connectivity etcetera.
