Put that money in an interest bearing account, and start with some software. Hazard a guess to say a majority of dubstep is made purely in software. Hardware's got it's place, both in terms of sound and workflow, but you should know what you're doing, and what you want before you spend. Otherwise you're just rolling some expensive dice based upon some internet wanker's advice.

If you've got just mad itch, I'd say an sp 555 from roland.

an Elektron Machinedrum and an MPC would be a killer combo for drums

This advice is spot on.

That said, if I were you I would cop an MPC and some sort of Analog or Virtual Analog 2 or 3 osc synth.

PS: I started on hardware and switched to software a year or so ago and I don't miss it. It definitely has it's place, but software is much cheaper, easier, and portable.

For someone who is in the process of ditching all of his synths and drummachines (with the exception of a couple) I would say stick with software ;) at least for me I find I finish tunes on the pc...where as with hardware I just end up noodling around. This might just be me :u:

However that said.

MPC2500 and a couple Dave Smith table tops are all I have around now :)

Synth = Moog, either a MiniMoog or Little Phatty.

Depending on which style i'd say a sampler might be better, but if you're going for a "synthy" sound Machinedrum is nice, but exepensive. Moog clones are good, Nords, Virus.. if you don't have monitors i'd say get that first. Can't tell from your post if you're starting out or not..

I recommend a nice, used groovebox to start your hardware setup.

A used Korg Electribe EMX-1 (synth based) or a Korg ESX-1 (sample based) have everything you need when you just start out to produce.

They are affordable, portable, sound good enough (many big names in dubstep/techo use them), and of course they are a lot of fun.

If you ever want to expand your setup, you can link up more hardware to them.

If you decide to switch to software, you can sell the Electribe for roughly the same price you bought it (if you bought a used one).

If your dead set on hardwear and making beats. Get yourself an MPC, you wont be disapointed.

no synth or piece of hardware will ever be genre specific
half the reason i hate what this forum has become
all about what you make of it
does producer x use piece of gear or soft y?
great he does can you work in it?
use what the fuck you know and make whats in your head
that's why your influences got so big
read the fuckin manual and watch vids etc

First post was vague, but op is looking for hardware where most of the sequencing and sound production functions are accessible through hardware controls, not a lot of menus etc etc.

Side note - I recently bought an mpc 2500, and I liked it. It's a little hard getting used to not having total control over your sound with the facility of software, but overall the thing is fun/different/no computer, but it's not worth $1100 with warranty which is necessary because of nuakai's shitty quality. For me it just doesn't do enough for the money. For what it does for me, I think it's worth about $500. I'm gonna try the sp-555 for around $400 and see where that leads.
