im gonna be dj'ing my first gig soon and the setup at the club is alot better than mine. i have 2 numark tt-1520's and a numark dxm06 mixer and at the club they have 2 technics mk5's 2 cdj1000's and a djm800. how hard is it going to be for me to use their gear? i have only been on my setup so im not used to anything else. will the decks have a much different feel? is it hard to jump right on cdjs? am i gonna get lost on a djm800?

sorry to say, but for me 1210's feel and respond differently to any deck on the market.

I would reaaaaaly recommend getting on some mates 1210's cause it will feel a whole lot diferent. Espec if the pitch your used to mixing is at +/-10 cause technics are +/-8

ask if you can warm up in the club before the night goes off. (or find a mate with some)

technics were'nt to hard to adjust to for me, but jumping straight into a club situation without touching them before (let alone your FIRST club situation) probably wont be wise.

If I was you, I would go to the club when it's closed for the public. Try and get a feel of the setup, before you actually play, because when the lights are off, and you can't find that input selector, your in trouble.............................

If you have only ever used ur gear then you will prob make a total fuck up of it.

You will find it confusing working out the new gear. You wont be able to hear shit and will get confused. If someone tries to talk to you or is anywhere near you it will confuse you.

I think you would find it equally as hard just jumping on a mates setup with 5 people watching.

yeah sex is a lot harder in a club, hard to see what's going on, on a woman you've not met before it can be difficult. I'd recommend getting in there beforehand for some practice, remember as well it's going to be a lot harder to perform with all those eyes on you......

The main thing with technics is you can just use the Pitch to mix, no need to touch the vinyl so in many respects its easier.... two - three tunes in you'll be fine. The most important thing to remember is to have fun... dont be to worried about it.

i started on belt drivens when first jump on to technics the feel was much different..

100% you will struggle with the decks but the harder part will be adjusting to the environment.

ph yeah stage fright, lighting, monitoring, all make a huge difference... but... Id worry about equipment, especially if your not used to the mixer... everyone seems to be noting the decks alot, but, you also have to bear in mind that a new mixer comes with new features, new layouts, and new things to fuck up... d hate too see you bump an input line switch and cut silent, definately investigate...

really though, if you just get on zzounds or something and study the layouts beforehand, you should be able to perform pretty well, granted not at your top, but, thatll come with time n experience playing out.

i'd just mix a few 140s to start with to get into it and get a feel for stuff.
played my first venue the other night and ended up playing pretty much all 140s cus i was shitting it, didnt have a bloody clue how to do anything with the mixer, and couldnt see anything.
was told it was a decent set but im sure i play 10 times better in my bedroom :/

I know how you feel. I have some Stanton Str8-60's and it's a lot different for me using 1210's in a club. It's almost like doing your driving test in a car you've never been in before, It isn't impossible but I agree with Pond Life, Im sure I mix 10 times better in my bedroom. My advice to you would be to get a warm up slot where there's less people so you most likely feel more comfortable, also if there's anyone else on that night who you know maybe ask if they wanna do a b2b? That was a big confidence booster for me on my first time i must say. And if you get chance before your set try and go to the booth a few mins early and have the DJ explain the set up to you, that's something I always try to do and it clears up the majority of uncertainties. My overall advice would be to enjoy yourself and if possible keep a convincing face on all the time, never let the crowd know if your unhappy. Thats my major downfall definitely, I need to get better at the good old poker face and I could really do with purchasing some 1210's!

And I agree with you there Depone.

On the note about mixng140s to start, you may also wanna take a minue to get a visual on the waveform for tracks you find yourself dropping alot, but using in ear matching... I know being a visual DJ is balls, but, I see nothing wrong with having a glance over shit that throws you off occasionally.

From what I've seen of that, it either works amazingly or people clang out horribly. Seems to be about 50/50

haha yeah seen that happen. For me its all about the pitch fader "pre wobble" to get it in time, refine it as you mix
