Talking of Russian choral music, I once had the privelege of the choir at the Novospassky Monastery outside Moscow. They were singing sacred harmony music rather than classical but it was one of the best sounds I've ever heard - I nearly coverted to Christianity on the spot.

I have a pretty large collection of classical vinyl. Can't get enough. There's a shop near me that sells whole "complete works of..." collections for diiirrt cheap.
More Liszt, a nice version of Mephisto Waltz.. dissonance heaven.

Most accessible bits are probably the 1st and 4th symphonies, then go to the 5th and 9th and Das Lied Von Der Erde for the full on shizznizz. Wunderhorn songs and Kindertotenlieder are also standard.dreamizm wrote:Any1 got any Mahler recommendations- there is a dark piece by him i am tryna find?
This (and the 4th Piano Concerto) are very much the one. If I had to pick one composer's works to survive some kind of collapse of civilization it'd have to be Ludwig Van. (Particularly if I could somehow sneak a bit of Bach along as well.)uncle bill wrote:Beethoven's 7th Symphony
Charity shops are your friend here - you have to be a bit careful about condition but if you find a good charity shop you can often pick up silly numbers of really good recordings of all sorts of stuff for almost no money... all while helping starving kids in Africa and Pets In Need Of Vets and things as well.wormcode wrote:I have a pretty large collection of classical vinyl. We actually saw this at the Royal Festival Hall a couple of months ago with the man himself playing one of the piano parts - it was one of the most immense musical experiences I've ever had - totally electric. Standing ovation at the end.Pi-Krust wrote:Also can't believe no one's mentioned Steve Reich yet[my bad if he has been]
Out of interest, do any of the London crew on here go to the proms? I know it's most famous for the flag waving bollocks at the end, but the rest of the season is a really great way to see some totally top rank classical for almost no money.
Re: SNH Classical music thread
Was talking about doing this last year, but we never got round to it. Didn't realise it was cheapish, either.slothrop wrote:Out of interest, do any of the London crew on here go to the proms? I live just behind the Wigmore Hall, so we try and check that out occasionally... they're often pretty safe with their picks, but it's a nice place to go and listen to some Mozart or Bach. They quite often leave the practise room windows open and if we're sitting in the garden we can hear (what I imagine are) hot chicks practising violin.

Everyone should find the orchestral video game music concerts. Orchestrated slices of old school Nintendo games like Chrono Trigger and shit. Well buff.
