am i too old for production?
In all seriousness though, no. Especially in house music. They seem to be ALL in their 40s. Dubstep is kinda new, so the age is younger, but who cares. Knock yourself out.

I'm 37 and survived punk/hardcore, metal, raving, hip-hop, junglism, indie, noise, etc.

Dubstep was the logical next step for me productionwise. Each age and experience group brings something new to the table.

The younguns have a fresh take, while us older types have the benefit of perspective more often. It's all good.

Funny, I asked myself the same question recently... I'm 30!

I think I was questioning it because I've got a wife and a daughter now with another baby on the way, I'm out of the house 12 hours a day at work... Basically I don't have huge amounts of free time and nothing to do any more like I did 10 years ago. I also tried getting into production several times since I was in my late teens but I never quite grasped it... Looking back, I was impatient and unfocused. Got so far, gave up, moved on to something else. But it is an itch that was never scratched, and as soon as I turned 30 I thought 'man, you really should have done better with that, you owe yourself, let's get on it'. Dubstep inspired me in that respect, I had become a little disenchanted with drum n bass after a 15 year love affair and Dubstep just hit me on such a deep level I needed to do something. So I enrolled in an evening course, got myself a copy of Cubase and a lappy, and got going.

You are never too old to do something you love. The only regret I have now is that I didn't start earlier because the vertical learning curve would have been scaled far sooner, but really, if it is making you happy it doesn't matter where you are at.

It is tough learning production with limited time. When I was younger I would just sit there for days on the computer fucking around. I am in the same boat as you know. Fulltime job, wife, 2 kids, house then I am trying to squeeze in running a label, djing, promotion and then maybe I can sit at the sequencer for a couple hours at a time. I get a long session maybe once a month if I am lucky. I managed to release about 12 tunes this year somehow. I don't watch tv or play video games, I'll tell you that. Plus I am starting to get to the age where I have to have at least 6/7 hours of sleep or I am miserable the next day. You have to love it. If you love it then it doesn't matter you will find a way to get it done.

I don't think Andy C even make tunes anymore does he? A lot of guys just make tunes to get gigs, obviously he doesn't need that anymore.

Being older just means having more experiences and influences to bring to the table. Should make for some interesting music IMO. There's no age limits!

I hear that. Big inspiration going on there abZ, good to know there are people in the same boat but making it work. I wound down on the DJ-ing a couple years back and my studio skills are akin to a three toed sloths on Ritalin, but as I said in my previous post I do love it, I do want to get to a level I am happy with and it's things like that above that gives a boost when you have been totally drained after a rubbish day at the office and you are home juggling a pregnant wife, a 13 month old daughter and all the associated guff that comes with being old :)

Big up.

Disclaimer: any reference to pregnant women or children being juggled is of course figurative, and no family members have actually been thrown around.

dont let the youngsters chat back to you, smash em if they do.

produce with ethereal wisdom and the smugness that you've seen it all and heard it all, and you'll be fine.

yeah, but they're all old ; )

seriously tho, there were ppl over 40 on this forum even several years ago (well, there was Shonky at least), and some of them already seem 2 have moved on from dubstep to other sounds cos its a spent force. i.e they r way more cutting edge than all the spotty teen wobblers who have just jumped on this sound in the last year.

there have been plenty of "how old is everyone" threads in the past, and "everyone" usually turn out to be all ages from early teens to late 40s.

i DO think that youth brings a certain disregard for, or ignorance of, rules, and a desire to rebel against the previous generation that often manifests itslef in innovation. And the energy and aggression of a 15 yr old gets harder and harder to compete with as the years pass.

But the bottom line is: do you enjoy it?

nothing else matters.

The interesting thing is is when I got into raves and shit I was like 22 and I was older than a lot of people even then. Most of the veteran DJ's weren't much older than me. The scene here was still pretty new in 96. It goes back to 89-90 but most of the dj's then weren't even out of highschool yet. But a lot of those guys are still around so now you see a lot of 30+ people at nights. In 20 years there will be 50+ people around with regularity. My point is most of the older people you see in this scene were young bucks at one point in time. I am certain I will still be doing some form of electronic music when I am 40 if not dubstep, I don't know what else to do with myself!
