Buying dubstep in Brussels / Belgium

Post by surr » Fri Jan 05, 2007 1:43 pm

Hi there Belgian dubstep fans,
(if you're not from Belgium it's probably safe to stop reading here )

I've been into dubstep for a while now and started buying records a few months ago. I used to go to Music Mania in Brussels, not for their renowned friendliness (mehehe), but because they were the only record shop selling dubstep I know of in Brussels.
Now, as you all know, they closed a few days ago, so I'm left with no shop to buy from. And since I doubt that I'm the only bloke buying dubstep records in Brussels, I'm asking you all for some tips on where to buy records.
Right now, my options are:
- a shop somewhere in Brussels, but I don't know any.
- buying online, but I have yet to find the perfect shop. Juno is nice w.r.t. shipping (it's relatively inexpensive and they have some sort of insurance against loss and damage -- which is nice because "de post" happens to steal a lot of packages ), but their catalogue is waaay to limited. On the other hand, shops with a nice catalogue, like Boomkat, charge too much for shipping and don't insure their packages.

So, what are your sources for dubstep records (whether shops in Brussels or online shops shipping to Belgium)?
Do you have good or bad experiences with any of them (perhaps due to "de post")?
Do you insure your packages or just live with the risk of them disappearing/getting damaged?
Or do you have tips on lowering the shipping costs?

Thanks a lot in advance!

u can find some Tempa stuff at PELE MELE

waz surprised to see that but yes they have :-)
and not second hand stuff... brand new shit ;-)

juno do the trick for me
if something is lost, no discussion they send it again to ya
had several troubles in the past with some other online shops and i must say juno is defo the strongest in that sort of topics

but it won't never replace a visit to Yungx at Blackmarket though ;-)

music man has some,
but they rarely update what they've got.
if you check the booty house bin for example you'll see there not a single record in it, and that has been like that for a while.
therefor, music man is a record shop to buy records at, and only visit again 3 months after.
don't even bother asking when the next records get in, they don't know, and if they're abble to give you a date they won't arrive then anyway

Thanks!

I did a little research and apparently brekbit has some sort of exclusivity contract with Lowlands, which means that he can order everything they sell (you can find their database online); but due to the exclusivity contract, he is not allowed to sell anything else. That means no Various Production, no stuff from Big Apple (I would kill for the "Invasion EP" ;)), etc.
Music Mania didn't seem to have that kind of exclusivity contract (or didn't respect it? :)) or they must have had another supplier, because I remember buying a record from Various Production from them.

Any idea if Goupil-o-phon is also only allowed to sell things from Lowlands, or if they can also get their hands on the more "exotic" stuff? :)

for goupil-o-phone it shouldn't be a problem, i would be surprised if they had an exclusivity contract.
that surprises me though, brekbit also sells second hand, is that possible with the exclusivity contract?

so you actually have to pay before for ordered records?

doctor vinyl only sells house nowadays, which is a pitty, they used to have such a varied selection of styles..

I buy my records @ PELE MELE (close to anneessens). Limited choice tho (tempa, planet mu, tectonic and the occasional DMZ).

Music Man sells some Tempa too (a bit more expensive than pele mele) but like Pablex already said...they rarely update there boxes.

Does anyone know if it's possible to order records in pele mele from labels such as Dub Police, Big Apple,...?

there's only 1 record i HAVE to get there still.
i won't mention which one, it's not even dubstep but you never know, the records on that label seem pretty difficult to find not long after their release

"I used to go to Music Mania in Brussels, not for their renowned friendliness"
-> :lol: :lol: :lol:
as i live closer from the netherlands i somtimes go at sirius, maastricht (planet mu, tempa, and sometimes dmz) or in liège you've got timeless network (planet mu mostly). but i'll recommand you hardwax.com, i've made a lot of order & everything's always fine! i've also tried hhv.de (mostly a hip hop shop but they got some dubstep 12" including old stuff) but it's new for me so i'm still waiting for my order

why don't you ask the record shop owner to order the things you wanna have, i mean if they can order the major labels they can order the smaller ones too, it's obvious that you know alot more of this stuff than the record shop owners, tell them what youre seeking, give them contacts of distributors etc
in ghent it's better now, i find most in musicmania now,
you find storming, dubpolice, earwax, big apple and lots of other stuff, and if they see that it sells, they will order more stuff,

i mean it's brussels, there are alot of dubstep heads there, it's not that there are only 2 or 3 people that would buy the dubstep stuff

give it a try you never now, just ask, and keep asking, tell your friends to ask about dubstep in the rec shop, after some time, they'll get it that people want more dubstep
and then its better for them and for you

and if they don't want to do it, then they are just plain stupid

diathroda > indeed, I try to do this every time now. Sometimes I get funny replies: today I went to Goupil-o-phone, and when I asked the guy at the cashier desk if they were selling "dubstep" he replied "Huh? Topstep?"

Anyway, the guy at the first floor of Goupil-o-phone was a lot more knowledgeable and I finally got a chance to order some of the more "exotic" stuff I was looking for. He also told me that they got their records from Audiopolis and another distributor (I forgot the name), and not from Lowlands, so anything I don't find at brekbit's place, I can now order at Goupil-o-phone (well... almost anything :)).

The only downside is that Goupil-o-phone seems to be a little more expensive and that you have to pay 5 euros per record in advance, as mentioned before.

Only tip I can give is to nip over to Ghent or Antwerp when you need tunes. Both places have a lot more going on. Has the Music Mania closed in Ghent, too?

nope,
as a matter of fact, what was left in Brussels is now to be bought there.

Sad to hear that Music Mania in Brussels has closed... Damn, i spent a lot of time in there when I was living in BE and it was always my first stop when visiting the city. RIP.
