motivation, pot, and production

Post by chronicrecords » Tue Dec 15, 2009 5:03 am

anyone have a hard time getting motivated to work on a tune or learn a technique if they are not high? this question goes out to the regular potheads :D

and to the sober crew, how long can u work on a tune before getting bored?

ive been in that boat before

couldn't be bothered to sit down at the computer and produce unless i was blazed

took me a couple months of being sober to get that natural motivation back, but my productions have improved 10x over since i stopped smoking all day and started eating healthy. clarity and a healthy lifestyle is where it's at

a lot longer than when i was high all day. when i actually got around to making music i would usually not get anything done . weed makes me dumb and lazy. it can be good to get a new perspective on a tune if you're stuck tho. ive had that happen many times as well.

Yeah man I can really do it either way. It's nice to start a tune blazin' and get those creative ideas out. Or start normally, create, and enjoy the finished product a nice rip.

nice one man. i have to agree a healthy lifestyle does seem appealing after being bein a pothead for the last few years. lately ive been seriously considering quitting just to get that healthy feeling and motivation back.

when i was smoking all the time i used to worry that i might not be able to produce if i was straight

now that i'm not smoking i find i'm producing just as much and the quality hasn't suffered, it might even be a bit better

i used to find that my mixes turned to mush if i stayed working on something for too long when i was high. now that's not happening so much which is nice

i still like to listen when i blaze tho

I have always made my tunes with the help of a little weed but things have been pretty bad financially. The last maybe half a dozen tunes I have done, I haven't even heard high yet. It is a pretty big step for me I think. It used to be I wouldn't even touch the buttons without a little chron.

I always prefer to start something before, and when i'm feeling it maybe then i'll take a few puffs.. usually I get so immersed in what's going on that I forget to smoke heh.

did my first bit of production high last night was surprisingly productive. Normally i get more aware and think of the epic task at hand, whilst when im sober i just get on with it and keep the flow up, i think just work in bite size chunks.

I started a thread on it about 6 months ago and got to about 10+ pages :D
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

There is a painful bit of truth in this one for me.

Been having a hard time working in the studio since giving up the habit. I'll still futz around and work on stuff but without the ritual it just isn't the same for me. Hoping this improves as time goes on but for now it is frustrating.

I can honestly say the worse muscial "decision" that I have made to date was to incorporate herb into the creative process.

...And everyone's different. Some people take one hit and freak out and curl up into a little ball - others you can't tell when they're stoned and when they're not.

But I think it's crucial not to mistake feeling tingly with being inspired, too. Inspiration needs no assistance, period. It just *is* or is not.

What I'm noticing is that [for me] when fiddling with sounds, jamming, and generally experimenting, a little herb is good.

Then when it comes down to arranging, mixing, and finishing/finalizing - an objective and clear head is best.

And when you feel the track is more or less done and you're all through with the major nuts n' bolts of production, listening to it when both very high and then sober gives you a pretty good, balanced perspective on what's really going on in the song.

But then, that's just me. Like I said, everyone's different.

happens to more people than u might realize.

it aint gonna be easy at first but give it some time bro. your frustrations will gradually ease and you'll find yourself feeling the natural highs of music all over again without the need to smoke out every time, which is a huge relief and benefit to your productions.

dont mean to poop on anyones party btw

Never smoked marijuana before, but lately xanax has become a studio staple. Used to obsesses over high hats and drums for hours, get frustrated and delete everything, rinse repeat the next day. Not now: If it dosn't knock me out, a xanax and a beer eases me right up. I'm churning out tunes like Rusko.

if i get it into a tune sober, i can go for about 3 or 4 hours straight w/o thinking about anything else..

if i've got weed, i can go the whole day, plus it makes it easier to initially sit down and make music..
