What is your backup plan if your laptop dies?
My hard drive just cakkkd out on me last night (luckily right after I deleted my only backup), but I sync most of my good music to my phone, so if worse comes to worst I can get back most of my tunes from there, and the tech at the store said he'd likely be able to recover some datas, so I should be mostly okay, but it made me realize that I really have no backup plan for if this happened while I'm working (I play for a student lounge and they're all off for christmas break, so this happened at a perfect time).

External hardives A and B, holding exactly the same data (samples, project files, vst's. Basically I have a backup of a backup, and we all need one.
Re: What is your backup plan if your laptop dies?
you can actually get an Enclosure for your busted hard drive and retrieve most if not all of your files. Same situation happen to me, hard drive busted, bought a new hard drive and with my old one i put into an enclosure plugged it in through usb and now have my own external.

I have lost data one time. I just sighed and moved on. You can get new data. Super highway of info innit. I have been using my wifes laptop to dj with while my dj comp is in the shop. I actually have this new system where I have the same couple folders on an external and both laptops. I'll just copy one in to the other and back again to make sure all tunes are duplicated.

Many of you are telling me ways to back up my data (which is great), but what if your computer crashed and you couldn't re-install in time for your gig? I'm talking wolverine breaks into your house and stabs your laptop. And you have to leave in 5 minutes.
I don't own any other equipment (in the past i've had old turntables and mixers kicking around, but i sold them all), so I'd be SOL.

Well WTF? You are fucked then. I mean you should at least have an external or even a 2/4 gig flash drive handy with you tunes. Worst case scenario you can talk one of your mates into bringing down their shit for you to play on. I have stacks of vinyl at my house, I could still play a gig even if some drops an EMP on my studio. If only I felt confident on cdj's I would never have an excuse not to do a gig.WatchYourStep wrote:Many of you are telling me ways to back up my data (which is great), but what if your computer crashed and you couldn't re-install in time for your gig? Cry and be a miserable tnuc for a few days
try to troubleshoot the problem and repair if at all possible
if that fails, borrow, sell, do whatever i could to replace my laptop.
I really need a back up one anyways, i have one laptop, running production programs and samples etc, and i use it to play out on serato.

Re: What is your backup plan if your laptop dies?
I've got Time Machine making incremental back ups to a partition on an external hdd. Then on another partition, SuperDuper makes a clone of my MacBook hard drive, which is bootable in a couple of minutes. That gets around the problem of restoring completely from Time Machine, which takes a while. Don't know how you'd do this on Windows.WatchYourStep wrote:Many of you are telling me ways to back up my data (which is great), but what if your computer crashed and you couldn't re-install in time for your gig?
Then you're screwed.I'm talking wolverine breaks into your house and stabs your laptop. And you have to leave in 5 minutes.
Seems to me like you're worrying too much. Backup your whole hard drive regularly onto an external hdd. Backup really important files to Dropbox - anything I'm working on currently is sync'd to that, so if my house burns down and the hard drive is destroyed, I've still got it. I'd like to get a second external hdd to keep at another house but that means £££...
