Re: motivation, pot, and production
Well, one thing that may - or may not - factor into this is the preponderance of Indica or Indica-dominant strains out there. For those of you unfamiliar w/ cannabis strains, there are 3 basic types: Indica, Sativa, and Ruderalis. You generally don't see a lot of Ruderalis because it's an autoflower (meaning it doesn't need a light cycle change to 12 hours dark, 12 hours light) and almost always lacks potency & yield as compared to the other two.nowaysj wrote:Thing for me now, I don't even get high when I smoke. Any oldtimers experience this? Maybe I'm not hitting the right stuff... Alpha? I'm by no means a pot head, I smoke occasionally, but it's nowhere near where it used to be. I used to get so high I could hear the ocean 10 miles away, so high I could close my eyes and go into a full on all senses hallucination. Now I just get a little squinty and laugh at inappropriate times.
Indica was originally bred for hash production and tends to be short & bushy: it produces tons of THC, which we all have heard of, but also a fair amount of CBD's, which is a little-known psychoactive that makes you hungry, groggy, unmotivated, and/or paranoid (sound familiar?)
Sativas by contrast produce a good deal of THC, and pure Sativas have very little to absolutely no CBD's at all. Sativas were what were mostly around in the 60's and early 70's (Thai stick, Maui Wowie, Acapulco Gold, etc.) Sativas grow tall & conical like Christmas trees, so are not as easy to hide; they also tend to be a little more high maintence - no pun intended - than Indicas. The switch to Indicas happened because pure Sativas have a much longer flower cycle (one or two crops a year, tops; Indica can do four or five per year) and Sativas also tend to yield less compared to Indicas - so obviously commerce will favor the plant that can produce a lot and more quickly.
The difference in highs between Indicas & Sativas is usually summarized as Indica = couchlock, anesthetized, spaced out, body high... and Sativa = trippy, energetic, head high you don't feel in your body as much. And much like wines with red and white, many connosieurs enjoy both at different times for different reasons.
Alright, so back to your original question Nowaysj - if you can get your hands on a Haze strain (which is a powerful Sativa-dominant type) go ahead and try it and let me know if the tolerance issue is still there or not. 9 out of 10 people get silly blasted on Haze, but as I said before... everyone's different. If that's not around (and it does tend to be really hard to find in the U.S. outside of top tier dispensaries,) then G13, Apollo 11, SensiStar, original Trainwreck, Romulan, and lately Platinum Kush [in the Bay Area] - these are all very potent Indica doms or Indica/Sativa mixes to look out for.
Collie 101's first session is now dismissed!

Silver Haze and Purple Kush up in my hood.

i do like having a scratch or maybe do some beat juggling when blazed, well trying to.

Re: motivation, pot, and production
I have one of these senarios happenin when I smoke a dooby or 3.
I either get huge inspiration from smoking, but then after about 1/2 an hour I start burning out and so do my tunes. Then I notice I just spent that 30 minutes tweaking reverbs and auditioning sounds.
I get inspired once again and belt out some scratching, but once again once I start burning out and I lose interest.
I smoke up and stare at a blank project and dont know where to start, then get on the net and waste a few hours of my life doing nothing.
Or my oxygen8's transport controls or something else will stop working on my PC and I get on some kick where I feel like I need them to function properly, so I delete the drivers and download the same I just deleted one to find my self in the same position as before I started. Then I get frustrated and browse for porn or something.
It only seems to work out for me when I have some direction with a song and think up some good ideas to add a few elements.
On a semi unrelated note I love snowboarding stoned, but I know full well it makes me tired way faster and I go in earlier. Yesterday I rode from open to close without weed and I was still charging hard at the end of the day...But I still would rather be stoned than not.

Personally, I've gotta have my studio buttoned down if I'm gonna be in ganja state. If something doesn't work, or I don't know how to do something in that state, I can just totally loose it, become totally fixated on either figuring it out or fixing it. Not good. My studio hasn't been buttoned down for a long time. Complete soft and hard mess. Doesn't help that I work on two laptops and a pc, all with different software, every time I reach for a certain compressor or a certain delay, it's not there, it's on the other system. In the ganja state, this destroys me.

Yeah man, that will not work. You need to have all of the technical issues sorted before you write or else the creativity will not flow. Nothing kills a vibe faster than something not working...nowaysj wrote:Personally, I've gotta have my studio buttoned down if I'm gonna be in ganja state. I smoke around a 8th everyday and it has had a big effect on my effort to produce, i just get very lazy when blazing up. Been producing today sober and it's been a alright session. Think I'm going to stop soon so I can start getting more shit done in the studio.

An 1/8th a day, I am sure, will leave you with a long term mental disability.

Yeah... like the inability to tell bad food from good, or a sudden affinity for Grateful Dead records.nowaysj wrote:An 1/8th a day, I am sure, will leave you with a long term mental disability.

Re: motivation, pot, and production
Man weed is like creativity steroids from me. Hence when I'm trying to create a new track I like to just be high and fiddle around with different samples, and when I'm blazed and have the time to focus musically I usually will emerge after some hours of playing around with the beginnings of at least something. Then when you're straight just fine tune (since tedious tasks suck stoned), as there are always parts that I thought were sweet high but just sound jumbled afterwards lol.
Re: motivation, pot, and production
I finally got a bag of 'dro after like 6 months of not having any
The biggest advantage to smoking pot for me is I'll just start working on a beat and I'll work diligently for like 2 or 3 hours without blinking. I am just able to block everything out and get creative. The biggest disadvantage is I tend to really push the effects and it can be a nightmare to sort out the mixdown later. I'd say a little of both (sober and high) and I can really push out some tunes.

q, though, re the everything good stoned bizness - do other people think it sounds good while they're high too?
If so, maybe it's just high music. Somethings can only be experienced in certain states. Some music is pre-dawn music, some is twilight. Listening to twilight music at noon might not work at all.

Re: motivation, pot, and production
I guess I am kinda the opposite. I don't smoke regularly anymore, I get fuckin rocked when I smoke now. If I am at the club getting high I have no choice but to bust out some sick ass moves. I leave people speechless, you never seen a fat guy move like that haha. My tunes sound good the next day too. If anything the stuff I make when I am sober is too, I dunno the sounds are somewhat boring. I don't take chances like I would when stoned. I wouldn't trust myself to mix down while high tho. At this point I can make a tune either way but it is a bit less business like when high. Fun and that is what it is all about imo.nowaysj wrote:Wormcode - +1, get all set up then totally forget, or take a little hit, then get sucked in, and forget to actually smoke.

But my experience of music is totally and completely different high v. sober (from memory). Sober I feel the beat, and sort of analyze whatever it is that is making a track interesting, but high, I'm completely afloat, buoyed by the sea of sound. These two experiences are completely different.
In terms of production... soberly listening to stuff I made when stoned, it usually doesn't make that much sense, but then when I hear it blazed, it makes sense again... Like I can only access the logic of the track in that state... kind of sucks.
