Novation Lauchpad

I got a Novation Launchpad controller for Ableton Live last week and just wanted to sing it's praises from the roof tops! If you are an Ableton Live user and are looking for a midi controller that basically does everything you want (launch clips, control levels and more) then the Launchpad is the one to go for. Definitely a winner!

Yeah man I have been eyeing this through the window for a bit now. It actually got me thinking about doing a live thing. I need monitors too tho :?

Yeah using it live would be cool as it's lights are pretty good to look at and moving between functions of Live is so easy and fast

Only problem I've found is that when I tried to run it with any other Automap controllers, it can be a bit temperamental. Or maybe I'm just not doing it right. Also if you've got Ableton 8 and Max for Live you can get a step sequencer template off the Novation website for free, which is pretty handy.

Yeh gotta get one of these, next payday, was gonna hold out for a monome kit but it seems pointless with all the stuff the Launchpad can do for it's price.

Wow, that's exactly what I want a Launchpad for...unfortunately I don't have Live 8 or Max for Live...I wish it could do that out of the box, personally :(

Hey i just bought the launchpad and im running live 7, but for some reason when i try to set it up in preferences the launchpad only shows up in the input and output, not the control surface, so therefore its not lighting up or working for me, if anyone has any ideas that would be amazing as i really dont feel like taking it back lol.

Basically, i had the same problem when i got mine. If your using live 7, it needs to be the newest version (7.18), so if youve brought it, you can upgrade for free.
If your using live 8, it needs to be 8.6

Hope this helps

If you wanted to use one for "DJing", could you fade a song/3-band eqs in and out w/ it?

There's a lot you can do with it that I haven't yet discovered but you can accurately set levels and fades with it by going to the mixer section and then selecting vol down the right hand side.

On the version of Live issue, you definitely need to upgrade to the latest version possible, whether that's Live 7 or 8. And also make sure that the Automap drivers are fully installed. I made the mistake of just plugging it in and starting Live without installing the drivers from the supplied disc and surprise surprise it didn't work!

this is my main question about it as well. im thinking about this but i would def rather faders and knobs to tweak. also thinking about the MPD32 if anyone has any insight into pros and cons.

I'd think that if you combined it with something like the novation nocturn, you'd have all of the functionality you need
Image
So then you'd have
Launchpad - $250
Nocturn - $60 (ebay)
Total $310. Not bad for a hardware setup

Nice wee setup for DJ sets, but you'll need to add another £20 on for the Automap Pro upgrade so that you can run the Launchpad and Nocturn at the same time. While you're at it though, if you have an iPhone you can get the Automap app for £1.79, and then mystify people at parties by keeping the mix going even when you go for a slash.
