So you don't like grime?

The times when dubstep and grime were close cousins feel distant now and I know a lot of dubstep headz get put off grime by the MCs.

So I thought I'd recommend this mix for my blog of upfront grime beats by Rinse's Elijah and Skilliam, which is hype and tuff enough to compete with most wobbly dubstep, but isn't wobble and is mostly instrumental.

The times when dubstep and grime were close cousins feel distant now

there were a lot of grime purists 5 years ago, that declared on their blogs and on this site as well that "dubstep will never be as big as grime" and how dare anyone try and make a purely "dubstep" community. why they chose to take offense to it being singled out, reveals a character trait about the politics of the UK underground. i really think that there's something to be said for the UK underground, not wanting to see its own people succeed easily. you can see this with the amount of hatred and fire that someone like wiley receives. the irony being that without him and PAYG, grime wouldn't exist.

5 years later, look how the tables have turned. 5 years ago grime had its own much more developed infrastructure (several magazines, several blogs, radio, websites, good newspaper coverage and forums too) than dubstep ever had in all of its years....yet dubstep has gone global now, and gets bigger every single day. this must really burn the grime purists. thats not to say that it was ever a competition between the sounds as one wouldn't exist without the other, but its worth illustrating that nobody controls the pulse of underground music...even its staunchest critics and bloggers can't hold it back. all that sites like this and others like (barefiles,gutterbreakz, drumz, blackdown, rinsefm etc.) have done is try to build community and focus people's attention on sound first, and everything else second. its got nothing to do with division, its got to do with inspiration.

personally I love grime. I always have but I also see the two sounds as a dysfunctional marriage. some years its good, and some years its cancerous but because its familiar, you stay and battle to make it work.

you're right a lot of grime mcs and fans hated on grime, but to be fair they were probably against a lot of other scenes too. and they weren't alone: tons of people hated on dubstep for all kinds of reasons. but thanks to the vision of geeneus, wiley, skepta and maximum, many of the grime heads changed their minds.

and yes there is a propensity for brits to complain when people blow up, but i dont think this is unique to UK music, it's a national trait just as when someone goes from nobody to somebody in the US, you guys go "hell yeah!" My theory has always been it's down to the "know your place" nature of the class system, but who can say for sure.

And sure 5 years later the tables have turned from grime to dubstep , but i dont see it as all the win for dubstep. on one hand dubstep has a global infrastructure and core grime is still local, but at least grime has kept its vision, whereas dubstep has lost much of what it was. Even grime's biggest champions within dubstep, arguably Plastician and Kode9, seem to have lost interest.

dubstep may have a healthy international club base but grime MCs have had about 5 UK number ones this year, from Dizzee, Chipmunk and Tinchy Stryder - despite Form 696 preventing a London club infrastructure. Wiley should do well in 2010 with "Take That." Commercial pop those tracks may be, but it has opened the door for grime MCs again. I think we're still a long way from a dubstep number 1, but this may be no bad thing.

That goes for everything in the uk not just music! Theres a real pessamistic gloomy attitude to everything over here thats infectious - mabeye its the weather?

One problem with grime that really stopped if from growing is its got the sort of attitude that brings out the sorts of ppl you really dont want to be at your event, a few years back police were shutting down every night bcos regularly at big events all it needed was a banging tune to be dropped and suddenly its all kicked off and someones got stabbed or cs gas let off etc. - playschool bullshit but not suprising considering a lot of the kids at those events were probably underage

I could be wrong but from what ive heard from mates who are into grime is that grime night have had a fair bit more attention from the authorities than other kinds of dance music - that was a few years back tho so things might have changed now?
