@knell, thats a shame dude, but your track is good, all i feel it needs is mastering as composition wise i think its pretty weird (in a good way) :D

karmacazee wrote:Hmmm, nice sounds, like that weird harpsichord sounding thing, but I think ur bassline is out of tune? It works when it's on it's own, but not with those chords (I think it's just one note that's off) :P Nice production on the drums though, sounding lovely
i think it may be off as well, that may have been what i was hearing and couldn't put my finger on :P thanks for pointing that out.
karmacazee wrote:The whole track should be based around that ending if u ask me ;)
haha i actually considered the same thing
karmacazee wrote:Big evil bass drone. Nice. Everything's coming through nicely too, nice mix :) Only complaint would be that it sounds a bit too rigid. Maybe try pushing your snare back a touch, or turning up the swing?
will play with the hats and snare a bit, does need more swing to it.
karmacazee wrote:Cool squelchy panned bass man! It overpowers the mix slightly though.
glad you dig it! probably my favorite bass i've made. maybe that's why it's up so high in the mix :P my subconscious likes to mix for me sometimes haha.

thanks for the time brother, really appreciate the feedback. after a few tweaks you think this could be release-ready? thanks again.

whatup kids,

been a very blue moon since i lasted posted any new tracks, someone post up some new material so i can check it out and reeeeeviewwwww!!!! god bless dubstepforum...

Been working hard to try and find my own sound, im not sure if this is it, but if anything, its my attempt at trying to refine my techniques and hone my producing methods...

Track's called "Cocoon", it's deep dark and medidtative, not a dancing banger but a late night chiller....

http://soundcloud.com/the-snare-bear/cocoon

Theres a dl link on my blog here http://atlantique.wordpress.com/ if anyone likes it, but one question: when i mixdowned in reason 4, the track came out as 54.3 mb- way too big!

How did that happen? I tried to compress it into an mp3 of 12.3mb in Nuendo, but the drums came out staticy and distorted...so i left it as the 54mb wav file. Anyone explain why this occurred? im novice to mixing down and mastering, still trying to tweak and sort it out...

Thanks alot DS Forum people, and happy 2010!

Good to see you in the prod section!

JFK - "1000 Yard Stare"

plus:
+very creative drum beat, think i might take note of this one!
+scary feel, the ambient parts sound like you're alone at a dock of a swamp and you just realized you have no idea where you are
+zombie samples? haha
+gives that mindset of trance

advice:
-intro is super quiet and uneventful.. not really attention grabbing, sounds like a long wind down on a record
-dry bass drum hits, which is weird because i heard a couple good boomers in there
-hmm, doesnt really go anywhere, could use a super melodic minor key bass to make it interesting
-drums are way hotter in the mix than the ambience

overall:
=you've got a sweet Burial/Bonobo feel going for you, with a little more complex programming, some super low bass with a good melody, and a few surprises, you could be my next ambient hero!!

much love :w:

+nice buzzy bass and metallic bass..
+goes into super wubs
+you got that ProPro sound, just keep at it, musically
+nice flow, good stuff

advice:
-let the signers come to you, just keep producing banger tracks and put them in the right spots
-i'd make the intro about one measure shorter if you want to do a long drop, just to pick it up a bit
-variation is nice, but could be a little smoother to make the sounds flow together
-bass melody line could be stronger, the buzzy bass tends to muddy the water a bit

was gonna write some more, but got some calls about jobs and food and a place to sleep, so i think i'm gonna go take care of that.

you guys be safe and keep the tunes blasting, you havent gotten rid of me yet

oh, and marshy:
i spent over an hour pulling my hair out yesterday trying to master that track "UmmM", but after making it sound horrible, i undid everything i did to it and it sounded decent (the version up now)... thats why its a 'demo' and not a finished track.. no matter what i do i cant make reason4 come out like others do... i listen to my tracks and then play mastered tracks right after it and can tell that mine just arent cutting it, and its killing me. i have no idea what i'm doing wrong! maximizing just causes me to Clip, and compressing weakens everything down. any advice? can i send a 320 to someone and can they master it just using that for some cash? is that how it can work? or do i need to work on it myself? i really am a clueless n00b when it comes to that. so anyone with any good input will be rewarded with endless 'knell reviews'... and yes, i've read the Mixing/Mastering thread and watched all the tutorials..

much much love :w:

no prob... its gonna take a lot more than me being down on my luck to stop me from supporting this section of the DSF :y:

plus, things are looking up from the way they were this morning... this town loves a starving artist haha.. being forced to do things on my own has grown me up a lot, and it's only been less than a day...!

Soundcloud

Cheers
the Snifit - "Leaky Light Bulb From Space"

plus:
+clap intro is nice once it starts to feel rhythmic
+unique
+those low ends sound like my tummy after a RedBurrito, sincere!
+kinda twisted my head around
+really crazy flow, definitely listenable, which is weird for such a bizarre mix.. biggup!

advice:
-intro is a little grainy like an old record... is this conversion or on purpose?
-samples are placed well but might want to be a little (read: *smidge*) louder in the mix
-it has the groove but its a little hard to listen to that main lead for the whole five minutes
-drums coming in at 4:02 could be a little more rhythmic to fit in the groove, unless you're pushing the envelope to make your own sound, which is awesome if thats the case
-feel like the ending (5:00 onward) could be cut in half, a little long, even for a groove track

overall:
=definitely not your average tune! i like your original take on sound production, its refreshing to hear something so new and off the wall, mixed in with such a great flow! copy-stnuc who just keep to the standard wubs will never make it out of the background/birthday party scene... keep up the good work, i have a good feeling about your future tracks!

Holy shit!! This is pure pure filth

Plus points:
1) Loved the way the bass works with the whole beat. kinda comes in and out and always keeps you on the edge of your seat.
2) The vocal sample "Johnny gives it to you from the grave...." fits perfectly with the whole vibe of the track and comes in at just the right times. Its important not to overdo it with vocal samples or they get monotonous but you have got the balance just right.
3) Drums are punchy and, from the way my monitors reacted, would fucking rock a big rig no worries. Would love to hear it through some meaty speakers, maybe pitched down a tiny bit.

Criticism:

Hmmmmm..... Maybe the drums as a whole are slightly too high in the mix (I do this too) but to be honest I am nit picking.....

Tune fucking rocks bruv. I would def play it out.

320 me up!!

Peace

Rubber
Rubber(LTUK) - "Joanna"

plus:
+had me from the beginning! solid intro
+splendid panning
+false drop bass intro nicely done
+good automation
+ambience oscillation and pitch bending was a nice touch for sure
+bang up job on the ending there!

advice:
-thinking the first big drop needs a more unique bass, sounds good but could stand out a tad more
-first drop feels a little more than just beat/wub
-if you changed the second big drop oscillations up, with a slower initial, could be massive
-careful the mix doesnt sound too dry, a solid sub bass with some resonance would spice it up for sure

overall:
=fun! classic sound and nice flow, your intro is super solid and ear-catching.. for me i need something a little more unique as far as a drop wub goes but i'm extremely picky so dont take that comment to heart too much.. good production! hope to hear more from ya

karmacazee wrote:And here's my effort. It's in my sig. Safe!
plus:
+originality points +++
+well mixed, for the most part
+blippy little intro is always classic, especially with that rockout drop ya got there...
+breakdown (@2:00)! super flow
+left me in a daze
+starts to get amazing (@2:48)... well done, well done... seriously. great tonality and melody line!
+your bass only break (in the 3:50s)... killer

advice:
-drums overwhelm the intro a bit, but are nicely done so not too many people would mind (since most people cry MOAR anyway)
-some parts towards the beginning seem a little twitchy and out of sync (like the snares @2:00, seems like an echo effect which makes it a little less powerful)? its been a long day so that might just be my ears acting up
-would love to hear a brutal bass thrown in as a surprise somewhere, but that would take away from the beauty so i wouldnt blame you at all if you left it AS IS
-maybe a 'brain food' intellectual sample somewhere during a break? your music would have people paying attention so you could really get a philosophy of yours across very well if you so choose

overall:
=mmk, you've got me sold on your sound, never thought ambience and danceability could stand side by side so well.. truly a classic, well done. really doesnt even feel like the song is almost six minutes, which is probably the most impressive part of all. so much variation, i lost count. ending is superb. just great all around. will definitely be keeping an eye on your future works

much love :w:

Ha nice work man :) Just smoked a fat one and listened to this.

Plus points:

1) I love using reversed sounds in my more chilled tunes and you have got them down to a tee here. Loved the panning on the (I think) reverse string sounds (the two stabs that happen one after the other). They kind of swirl around your head and give the whole piece a nice dreamy vibe.

2) The drums hold the whole thing together well and no one element stifles another so you get a good head nodding groove going on. Loved the contrast that the more metallic sounding elements give it adds a nice variation. They also manage to be quite intricate but not cluttered.

3) Like what you did with the chopped up female vocal in particular, reminded me of some the early trip hop stuff in my collection. Also, getting multiple vocal samples to work together isnt easy and can sometimes distract the listener from he groove but yours sit nicely in the mix and compliment each other nicely.

4) My missus fucking loves it!! :D (The tune that is........ )

Constructive Criticisms:

1) Maybe a little too long at 6 mins plus.
2) Would like to hear the drums a tiny bit higher in the mix, but not too much. Wouldnt want to spoil the whole laid back vibe.
3) The last breakdown kind of lost me a bit. But I was blazing at the time.......
4) I would have had a longer intro bringing in the percs a bit more gradually leading up to the drop.

Over all a top quality track. Keep up with experimental stuff dude!! Experimental is good. I bet you make some quality chilled dubstep too. Would love to have a listen some time.

Big up
