recording percussion... in India.

Post by Sharmaji » Tue Jan 05, 2010 2:53 pm

folks--

posted this in the main forum as well, but figured it's even more relevant here in ye olde production forume.

Dhruva, my compatriot in Sub Swara, and I were trading time in India this winter-- missed crossing over by 3 days but essentially from the end of November until tomorrow, one of us has been there-- gigging, recording, etc. Dhruva just finished up a video blog of one of the sessions he held for percussion for the new Sub Swara record-- thought you guys might enjoy the little behind-the-scenes bit of recording.

http://subswara.com/video-blog-india-studio-sessions-4/

lots of funky instrumentation there that you can't really find anywhere else... bass dholak, chemde, bugdu...

snippets of the works in progress as well.

^ yeah man, looking forward to having the time to really get into the material. As they were recording in India, I was recording some other material (mostly latin and brazilian) here... mashup central.

That looks/sounds awesome; I've been wanting to do something like that for ages now! I have a friend who spends a lot of time in Malaysia and India and I really want to visit him and do something similar over there. There is nothing like a bit of authentic percussion to make tracks come to life!

Please keep us updated, I'd love to hear how things progress. Have you thought about making some of the samples available for others?

Live it up !

Wow.. with the snow round these parts at the moment some
great music and hot tropical Indian weather would go down a treat.

Dhruva and I actually split up the India trips-- i was up north and then down to bombay in the first 1/2 of the month, and then D was down in Chennai the last few weeks, where he got the recording.

while i was up north it was FREEZING cold. dang!

one thing i love about recording Indian instruments is the huge breadth of what's available, from dhol & dhad up in the Punjab to mrdingam and thappatam in the south. huge ranges of sound.
