Re: Good distortion vst?
Thanks for the thread, I have been wanting to expand my freeware distortion options.
For distortionish stuff I usually use the basic waveshaper that comes with FL studio.
I have been wondering about the relationship between distortion plugins and waveshapers. Are waveshapers just a different way to visualize how distortion works or is it a different process altogether? If anybody knows I would be all ears.

Re: Good distortion vst?
Dude, bitcrush n waveshaping = all god ever meant for thier too be...
Cyanide to Waveshape...
n that generic tanish Bitcrusher everyone has... Downsampling>Bitrate>Overdrive... and preferably some different algorithms to do it.
Snarl has a neat sound too if you put through reverb, downside, its mono output.
But seriously dude, just multi-route your basswave on the mixer too like 50 extra channels, then send all those duplicates too a single channel with some compression or limiting to make it all one, and just start puttin waveshapers and bitrushers on them sons a' basslines you routed out, and send a few to a LITTLE bit of reverb to give it that pa cabinet hollowing effect ... the more you put, the more waves and sounds in the overal 'voice' of the bassline...
I think the human voice has something like 24 tones too it... n considering we connect to note becasue it resembles voice, this would probably be your golden number... listen to any good bassline, its got a multi-wave voice quality too it. Go for harmonics in that crazy routing chain.
Go crazy with it.

Re: Good distortion vst?
Personally I use...
CamelPhat - if I want to get some modulations in there
CamelCrusher - when CamelPhat's other features aren't required
Ohmicide - multiband nastyness
Decimort - my favourite bit crusher
Devastator - multiband, much less flexible than Ohmicide but has a nice sound to it.
Guitar Rig 3 - can do all sorts of crazyness

Cyanide - Waveshaper
Ohmicide - good, but expensive distortion plugin. Tbh I found it too much for my tastes
PSP Vintagewarmer (drive on that baby is amazing)
Any overdrive plugin
Saturation plugins
With all of the above, the best distortion comes from just small bits at a time, all layered up.
