It's 2010, and after a much-needed winter break, COLONY returns to east London to pick up exactly where it left off: at the deep end of the dance music underground, genres be damned. We're waging war over two fronts this year, via E1's much-improved Rhythm Factory (fit, lest we repeat ourselves, with a thumping 11k Turbosound rig), and E2's ever-reliable rave cave The Russian (now with added woofer power). In both cases, you can expect the usual blend of dark, bass-heavy sounds, with the emphasis, as always, on quality over hype, and a healthy mixture of new and established talent. Bo!

For our first party of the annum, we're back at the Factory, with a line-up that represents the very best in deep, forward-thinking club music (and then some). Headlining are Sheffield's The Black Dog, who, over a period of more than 20 years, have built up one of the finest discographies in all electronic music. From classic proto-IDM workouts (Temple Of Transparent Balls, Spanners) to more recent excursions into dubbed out techno (Radio Scarecrow, Further Vexations), they've been at the bleeding edge of British electronica, never resting on their laurels and always probing new territory - as evidenced by their label's latest, genre-hopping EP. They're genuine heroes of ours, and having not played in London since January of last year, it's one hell of a treat to be bringing them in to help kick off the decade. Second up is London's much-lauded dubstep auteur Pangaea, of the perennially righteous Hessle Audio massive. With only a handful of releases to his name, he's already garnered a fierce reputation, taking house, garage, jungle and dub and melding them into a uniquely uncompromising take on UK bass music that's often powerfully affecting (if you don't believe us, check out his new EP, due out imminently on Hessle - it's the tits). A superlative DJ who's unafraid to mix things up, expect a heady array of next-level sounds from him, and no little low-end thump. Finally, to complete the bill, we're chuffed to bits to be welcoming the mighty Equinox: a titan of true-school junglism who's released with everyone from Metalheadz to Planet Mu. In a scene awash with over-hyped, overproduced trash, he's remained true to the cause of dark, abstract beat science, crafting some of the deadliest Amen destroyers you're ever likely to hear, and winning plaudits from pretty much everyone in the know. A formidable talent behind the decks, he'll be delivering a typically mind-bending selection of proper drum and bass music that's guaranteed to have anyone in earshot fitting - in a good way.

As per usual, Residents MB, CB, Darkin and Foy (our newest recruit) will be providing the supporting sights and sounds, whilst Rhythm Factory's trend-bucking drink prices will ensure you leave the venue less out of pocket than you'd expect. That, and the fact advance tickets are going for a criminally reasonable £6. Don't say we're not good to you!

I've just booked megabus from Bristol for Saturday with nothing to do when I get there. I can't commit to buying tickets as there's a couple of people need convincing to go. I know all about Pangaea but what is this Black Dog you speak of?

The Black Dog are absolute legends man. They've been around for nearly 20 years and have made some of the most amazing lush electronic and techno music. They use to be signed to Warp.
