I'm going to bring it back with Machine Step and MechStep...

;)

I'LL AGREE NO NO NO to subgenres! THE BEAUTY OF THIS THING IS THAT IT'S SO MIXED UP and fresh.

So many flavours can be in one set. That is the future of Dubstep. It can sound very different and people are open minded enough to give it all a try. The more people experiment, the more interesting it's going to be.

exactly what i love with dubstep is that its still ALL ONE MUSIC.
Like DnB, i loved it when it was ALL DnB, yeah Nicky Blackmarket and Hype would play more jump up, Ed Rush & Optical used to play more techy, Fabio/Bukem always played lighter smooth things, Andy C pure dancefloor, Loxy for the deeper darker stuff ...... each DJ had thier own take on the sound and used play what they liked....you could reach rave and all them guys would be on the same bill and you knew that each DJ would be playing their particular vibe........

Now if i want to see hype i gotta go true playaz 'jump up' rave where all night the Djs play all that one style and rinse the same tunes, if i wanna see Bukem i gotta go Progression sessions and its 'liquid' all night, Andy C i go to a ram night, Loxy i go to hardware for the 'tech step' its rubbish and fucks the scene up and fucks the vibe up.........

We dont need to label and sub genre just beacuse certain tunes have certain characteristics.....jus settin ourselves up for a fall and putting restrictions on the sounds.... ITS ALL DUBSTEP from Distance to D1, from
from Benga to Burial ....... dubstep comes in all shapes and sizes......
DONT DO IT....
Come on people havent we learnt anything?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!!?!?!?

right.......i have been noticing for sometime that dubstep is branching out in the direction of liquid dub, when i say liquid dub i mean the mellow, mellodic side of things.
its not branching out at all! jeeeez what about the sounds that distance, headhunter, pinch etc play.....branching out into deep dubstep?!!!
NO jus different DJs play different styles, and to be honest most DJs play sets that contain alot of their own tunes.....thats jus their sound, that they like......D1 for example plays alot of his own stuff....if you like it GREAT! if you like making it GREAT. But you dont have to have your own bloody genre........

I'm a bit wary of over-clasifying things - but it's good that peeps want to make different sounds. Diversity is positive. So is keeping an open mind.

I think we are all losing sight of something.

if it's a BADMAN TUNE!!!! I'm gonna buy it, right. I couldn't give a feck what it is catergorised as.

The problem of sub genres is when it starts fucking with the dance. DMZ over two rooms playing 'liquid' and the main room playing 'wobblers' or some such nonsense.

THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN!!!!

Hey Quest. I wanna answer your post directly because you started this thread.

Firstly I wanna say if you're up for making less dark dubstep, that's heavy because there is definitely an imballance towards the wobbly/agressive/dark stuff right now and I prefer the ballance. I think this is why I loved and supported your "Mirage" 12".

But this wasn't my point. I would love to see more mellow/melodic/lighter/weirder/dissonant etc dubstep to ballance out the straight dark stuff but I'm uncomfortable with the terms "intelligent" and "liquid".

The "Liquid" term comes from d&b, from the lighter style Fabio pioneered. The problem is it came to mean some of the blandest, most washed out, plastic housey flavours of d&b, just as far removed from the soul of London's urban jungle scene as the noizy, hyper 180bpm agressive stuff was. So yeah, people in the industry do use it, but the problem is it carries negative resonances.

The term "inteligent" is worse. It dates back to when jungle first got the national media's attention in the mid 90s. "intelligent jungle" was used to describe the lighter styles that people like LTJ Bukem played. The term was invented by (predominantly middle class, white) media because it appealed to their readers (predominantly middle class and white) and they were too embarrassed to tell their readers that they were feeling the same jungle scene they'd slagged off a few years earlier.

The problem is describing one side (predominantly middle class and white) as "intelligent" meant that you can infer that the other side (predominantly working class and mixed race) is seen as less so - which is wrong. So the term has buried in it the intent of both a class and a race slur.

Now, I'm in NO way saying you're using it in this way, but the problem is if everyone else goes around using it in this way, the resonance of that race and class slur remains in the term, for those of us who remember mid 90s jungle.

Agree with what Blackdown and Decibella said. I like the more melodic side of dubstep, but it doesn't need it's own category.

People look at dnb and think "it started with beats, sub bass and a reggae/ragga influence, then went dark/tech after jungle, then after that liquid styles got bigger". Dubstep isn't dnb - it doesn't have to follow the same progression, with the same category names. And if you are gonna categorize, at least let's keep things fresh and come up with a new name lol.
