I'm making eurostep but i need to be careful not to attract gay muscled people with flashlights in their thongs to the scene..... so i probably won't place that extra kick and clap i was thinking to my tune...

Heny, no ones bringing the music down, we are just having a debate informed by mistakes made from other genre's. Personally I have always moaned when someone says breakstep or techstep, they dont exist in my mind. I enjoy the mellower flavours anti soc and that are coming with but I dont think it needs new name, my opinion is that to celebrate the music best we should keep under one banner.

Its been an interesting thred, big up.

It seems that people haven't read quests post properly or any other comments for that matter.

The point is that no 1 is trying to label a sound at the mo, just using identifiable terminology to describe what they are trying to do and thats it.

I dont understand why people get up in arms when ever sume1 decides to define what they are trying to do. Its the sound they are pushing not an entire movement. Is it fear of take over? is it a personal thing? or are people trying to be abit too p.c. when it comes to this scene?

Sum of you need to get off that horse on stilts and realise that above all else it is about the music and nothing else. Terms and words is not what begins the demise of scenes, its people, and politics.

Yes Heny mate..... :)
I hear you. Plus you know i got bare love and repect for yoooo assss :) and im not saying that 'labeling' music will change how i or anyone else feels about the music. I appreciate you been pusing this thing from day dot, so this dicussion may seem petty.
Speaking from my personal experiance of another scene which i loved and thought i would never ever ever ever ever give up on, a music and a scene that i thought would never ever ever ever stop giving me them goosebumps and tingles........ i welcomed the sub genres, i thought it was positive. But now after seeing the devistating effects it can have on a scene, i love this dubstep things so much, im jus scared that similer could occur........because i always thought id be raving to DnB forever, it was my passion, jus like dubstep is and has been yours from time......
Im jus talking from my experiance of this sub-genreing in another music. Ive seen the effects and no matter how much people love the sound, it can, and will, have some knid of impact on the scene as a whole.....unfortunatly.

I'm more interested in Quest's chromaesthesia, tbh. I know quite a few synaesthesiacs (myself for starters ;)) & it's always interesting to see how their unique perspective usually draws them into sonic fields of some description. There's also similarities in how they express themselves in writing, too.

For the record, I'm instinctively against the division of Dubstep at this point, I think it's far too early for that & I like the diversity of sound it currently enjoys. I'm also for more complex percussion & musicality, and as someone pointed out earlier, DJs develop their own styles- the style they play might be described, but another might play a lot of same tracks but with a different feel.

I will say this again and again and again and this why i love dmz. Mala, Coki and Loefah between them have all styles which is important to me as a listener and a paying punter of both records and dmz events.

I do not understand what you are on about quest. I like your music and really i think you should let that do the talking rather than starting topics like this.
Why Haven't you learned anything

it seems like everyone's thinkin about this too much.

if y'all think that labeling it "liquid" or "intelligent" will hurt this music, maybe you should look at what happened when it wasn't just garage anymore, but it was "dubstep."

labeling the subgenre of garage seemed to help it out. i'm not saying i'm for calling shit liquid or intelligent, but they're just fucking words. dubstep itself is a subgenre.

and i don't think people are trying to cut the scene down into subscenes, but maybe more like trying to separate themselves from something they don't feel a part of. if you feel the need to categorize every sound maybe you're not in it for the right reasons. i jam good dubstep. no more, no less.

i know exactly what quest is on about...
this kinda change however is inevitable, when new personalities come into the scene...
i think with the darker music, its something you got to really feel if your going to create it, this is why i personally dont like hearing every man and his nan making these dark chromatic type melodies simply cos they are trying to immitate the current sound, my little motto is the melody is a reflection of your soul..
do YOU innit, not skream or loefah et al...

if it's a BADMAN TUNE!!!! I'm gonna buy it, right. I couldn't give a feck what it is catergorised as.

The problem of sub genres is when it starts fucking with the dance. DMZ over two rooms playing 'liquid' and the main room playing 'wobblers' or some such nonsense.

THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN!!!!
Agree!

But it also gets a bit stupid when you can't talk about what a tune sounds like for fear of being jumped on by the subgenre police.

"What does X sound like?"
"oh, it's kind of bouncy melodic dubstep..."
"BOUNCY MELODIC DUBSTEP!!! WTF IS THIS SHIT? DUBSTEP IS DUBSTEP AND IT DOESN'T NEED ANY SUBGENRES. WHY DO YOU HAVE TO TRY TO PIGEONHOLE EVERYTHING? DO YOU WANT THE WHOLE SCENE TO SPLIT UP INTO MISERABLE LITTLE FACTIONS? THE DIVERSITY IS WHAT MAKES IT INTERESTING!!!"
etc.

Rubbish. We have had a good discussion, if this was DOA it would have dive bombed into "STFU n00b cnut" "you fucking ghey" by the second reply. Fact is its been pretty good natured and the more opinions the better.

STFu noob cnut you fucking ghey

There, feels more like DOA already doesn't it :D

Before Bukem went "intelligent" he was playing tearout jungle alongside the more melodic tunes and that's what I liked about early jungle - no subgenres. No reason why you couldn't hear some Omni Trio alongside DJ SS or Ed Rush. When it got compartmentalised it got shit, lame intelligent pieces at one venue, harder than thou techstep at the next, jump-uppy jump up at the next.

I do think that darker, minimal sounds are coming to the fore but as these things move in cycles, I can see that reaching a dead-end and then folks will go off and do something different.
Hmm....

Me again. Yeah i know Quest's work inc. Hardfood. Not v d&b but you see...

I never get involved in these discussions but this one had gone four pages without some twat lowering the tone and upsetting everyone, i mean, what kind of message do you think that sends out? That 'liquid dubstep is the future' is a less contentious issue than 'dubstep is grime made properly' or the old 'bass vs midrange' condundrum ...has the world gone mad?

Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.

Now let us never speak of 'liquid dubs' ever again.

Seriously.

Well, there was the 'tearout jungle' subgenre and the 'melodic' subgenre. But the difference was that (enough) DJ's and producers didn't feel the need to keep them seperated and stick to one or the other. Acknowledging that there are different styles and sounds isn't going to split things up in itself.
