The Drop

Post by DjTrainWreck » Thu Jan 21, 2010 4:16 pm

Hey guys,

Im working on a track right now.. but my drop isnt what i want it to be. What im saying is, the bass drops but not as fat as i wanted to. So My question for the day is; What are your tricks and tips to a fatty bass drop? -If you dont mind sharing. Im looking to make a drop that just blows the roof off if you know what i mean. Thanks in advance.

Step 1-
Build it up... (but dont use any kick rolls) Using synths that start low then get higher in pitch (easily modulated with an envelope).

Step 2-
Pause... Leave the listener hangin on his/her edge of their seats.

Step 3-
Drop that filth.

step 4-

£$£$£$£ Profit £$£$£$£

Something I don't do enough is making sure that the sounds you're using, if they're going to be used as a constant, full part of the track, used at the beginning being a tiny bit quieter than they will be in the rest of the tune.
Say... the drums (I typed drugs there unconsciously lol), the atmospherics, the melodies etc.
Debut album "Bass, Space, Pace & Peace" out now on Methodology Recordings!
Cheers to all supporters and those who've dropped tracks in their shows!! :e:

to add to depone's point: hold back your sounds, esp your sub bass, untill the drop. let the track progress and build up and then pause....... then drop your bass. i think this is the single hardest thing in producing a good tune is the buildup and creating tension before the bass hits. i throw in the kitchen sink on the drop, the bass, a double time highhat line, dirty synth stabs, crashes etc

To be honest I think those rises are sounding just about as rinsed as the whole dnb kick drum build up.

It's all about texture, your drop is going to have an impact either because things become very sparse jut beforehand, or everything has gradually layered up to a peak.

in addition to all the on point advice given, and in relation to what the man wrexile said is something Rusko drops in his production master class:

lower everything in the intro by 1-3 db.

another thing I've started doing is after the 16-32 bar intro....have a sort of minimal drop for the next 8 bars instead of the actual drop. so it kinda is like "wow what a weak drop....this is womp womp"....and then after that 8 bars the bass and all the things them come like BOH!!!!

you see...

i started to describe my method and philosophy concerning drops... but then concluded that it wouldn't really help anybody, because it's more the way my mind in particular works.
