I've never used 'lol' in a moment of genuine laughter ....ever. However i do use it quite alot in moments of awkwardness, then it just annoys me when i happen to be talking to someone annoying enough to reply with "what was so funny?". :|

I find that people use it to try and lessen the awkwardness of something potentially awkward - eg. you owe me money and i'm pretty pissed you haven't paid me back yet LOL

OK, prime example of an annoying way of using LOL.

This bird works in my dept and shes about 40 years old and is a generally dickhead most of the time anyway and shes leaving, so she sent this email round, here is a snippet:
If anyone is interested, I am thinking of having a few drinks and maybe a bite to eat down the road on Monday 1st Feb.

Is anyone interested? I am on a 7 - 3 but can wait for any stragglers, lol .
she sits next to me, she didnt laugh out loud.

im going to etch those 3 letters into her lips and see if she LOL's then.
