Why does the 'Sweet Shop' release sound like shit??

Post by WatchYourStep » Mon Jan 25, 2010 8:37 am

Did anyone buy 'Sweet Shop' off nu-urban just now like I did? Take a listen to it yet? It sounds like shit, right?

Compare it to the same song taken from his mix for Disrupt:on:

http://www.mediafire.com/?0n02jgzin3m

That rip sounds miles and a head above the released version, so what gives?? Did someone press the wrong button before it went out the door or something? All the bass is gone in the released version, it sounds hollow and cold, and there's this small echo all over the track like it was recorded playing off some speakers in a small room.

Nobody is more excited about this release than I am, so I'm just scratching my head here!

Don't think this necessarily has anything to do with the mastering - theres a few pressing plants out there who are well in need of being shut down and unfortunately lots of ppl involved in this game are either tone deaf, too stoned to notice or just dont give a shit about the quality of their records. One plant I know was messing up quite a few pressings but the other one was fucking up absolutely everything that came thru their doors and damaging every single laquer that they used (so that I had to get 2 releases remastered 3 times!!!) we're not talking a few crackles and pops here we're talking the whole record distorting slightly the whole way thru so that theres a constant "muffled fart" quality to the bass.

Ppl really should be aware that to a certain extent you get what you pay for - if your using one of the cheapest plants around it may well be that cheap for a reason - there are affordable plants but all it takes is for them to lose some of their staff and suddenly they've got serious problems

Having said that hollow and cold with no bass does make me think something went wrong either at the final mixdown or mastering stage...

first of all, is your copy digital or vinyl?

I'd start at the outlet you purchased it from. Respectfully make it clear what the problem is and that it needs to be solved asap, and inquire about any info they may already have about the issue.

Hold tight and see if anybody else has the same issue here.

If it's digital the problem will almost certainly get solved.

If it's vinyl it could be quickly replaced by the outlet but it could also boil down to a recall or worse. rob has made good points there. rob i think you know more about this than I do. anything to add as far as what actions he could take are concerned?

last (shouldbe first but to not insult you i put it last :D) and not least, if it's vinyl and it's the only record you've played since you bought it check all of your cable connections literally from needle to cartridge to headshell to tone-arm to mixer to amplifier to each speaker etc... your description actually sounds like a typical 'loose tip/ring jack' to me. just a shot in the dark.

Good luck.

I bought it on digital. I've sent a note to Dr. P, maybe I'll send one to nu-urban too.

i noticed this aswell. i heard a sample from junodownload.com - http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF1512578-02-01-01.mp3

ive noticed in the past aswell tunes that have been on rotation before releases have slightly changed in sounds.
