quittin...
i've gone 3 days without cigarettes now. has anyone tried quitting recently? i would usually smoke up to about 25 cigarettes a day(if i went out on the piss). any advice would be appreciated.
Re: quittin...
just take it hour by hour, craving by craving. it's seriously a battle with yourself. remember a craving only lasts a few minutes.
Re: quittin...
Hey,
I'm working on it myself, after these exams which end tomorrow i'll be on a holiday to turkey, and after that i will be quitting too.
So i can just say to you: Hang on, you'll get there eventually
, it's been great that you have stopped for 3 days already.
If you get a hard time, use some chewing gum or a lollipop, anything to keep you mouth in action, like you would do with a cigarette.
it helps, and avoid alcohol as much as you can those fuckers always make me smoke
i wish you the best

Re: quittin...
Well done for going 3 days. Those are the hardest days apparently so you are over the worst, keep it up.
Ive started smoking again after 8 months off the evil weed but when I was trying to quit I found it easier to stop by realising that probably only 2 of 10 cigarettes a day are actually due to cravings and the rest was purely out of habit, like when on the phone, waiting at the bus stop or after food.
If you can find something else to occupy your mind when you have these habit moments like chewing gum, eating food or just having summin in your hands to play with then its easier to cut down from 10 a day and only smoke when you get craving, if you really have to. This has helped me to half the amount I now smoke and I really got my appetite back too.
If you have the will power to go completely cold turkey and can ignore those cravings then even better but some people find stopping immediately to be a real struggle and only end up smoking shortly after trying to quit. You have to do what feels best for you really.
Another thing that will make you determined not to smoke is when you start tasting food properly and you find that the stale smell of smoke on others is a real turn off. You realise just how disgusting a habit it is.
This advise is of course coming from somebody who now smokes again so take it or leave it but it made it easier for me when trying to quit.
Oh and remember that if you have gone a long time without smoking it could only take one pull of a cigarette to get your habit back so next time you are offered just think about all the hard work you could be risking.

Re: quittin...
I need to quit.
I find the hardest part is not having the first cig of the day, after that first one im resigned to defeat and continue to smoke. Its makign sure I dont have that first one too early that will spur me on I reckon. Got to not have one before I get to work at 9 but instead at lunch, iif I can tide it out till then I can last til the evening and then from there on in QUITTING!

Re: quittin...
after six years smoking, i realised last tuesday that i just didnt enjoy cigarettes anymore and so stopped. there are a few pangs every now and then but mostly they pass within a few minutes. though i still smoke the green plant so it hasnt been strictly smoke free, i already feel less weight in my chest and generally healthier, its a good feeling.
also i recommend reading allen carrs easy way to stop smoking, i started reading it 2 years ago and stopped cos it put me off smoking and i didnt actually want to quit at the time. so i imagine if i had actually finished it it would have worked pretty well.

Re: quittin...
I haven't smoked since new year. I was on 40 a day for about 3 years before then and around 20 a day the previous 3 years. It gets easier, just be strong! Simple. Don't get any bullshit nicotine replacement, it makes it harder.
It's still difficult now but no way near what it was... Find a hobby or spend more time doing your current hobby, anything to keep your mind off it!

I really really want to quit now, health reasons mainly, but also £6+ a pack takes the piss a bit. Be cheaper to be a smackhead

Re: quittin...
that's some quality advice faust. you should work for the nhs. im gonna just go cold turkey because i find it is more of a habit - waiting at the bus stop, getting off the bus, after eating, breaktimes at work etc. I lived in holland for 5 months last year working, and i would smoke about £30 of weed a day. When i came back to England, i decided to just stop altogether, knowing full well, the weed was gonna be shit, and i don't particularly like waiting for some dodgy youth on the corner to rip me off. i didn't smoke weed for a month after i came back and up until now i have had about 10 spliffs total from last september. i think it is completely mind over matter, for me anyway. sometimes when i smoked i would just look at my cigarette and think "i'm payin to do this". i'm gonna try going teetotal completely for 6 months. if i make it to my birthday in july without doing anything, im gonna go on holiday somewhere with the money i'll have saved. I figured out i'm spendin the best part of 2grand a year on cigarettes, and with this in mind, there's no way i could carry on smoking with that figure playin around in my brain.
Even after 3 days, my sleep is already better, my throat feels clearer and my clothes smell better. plus i don't have to stand in the freezin cold outside the pub, i can stay inside all night. If anyone is thinkin about quitting, i would seriously advise them to do it.

Re: quittin...
how the fuck do people get up to 25 cigs a day? I smoke on command. Mostly during the week i smoke 1 or 2 a day. I Also days have days when i just don't smoke. I only smoke more then 5 during the weekends when i'm at friends or if i'm out. I'm doing it like this for almost 3 years now and i haven't got any problems
edit: the point i'm trying to make is, that why do people have to either smoke 25 a day or quit 100%. Why not find a golden midway, a bit of balance. Just smoke a few cigs a day. don't exagerate. And if you feel that your smoking too much lately quit for a little week just to show yourself who's in control. (wtf?). This maybe sounds stupid but personally i don't smoke out of addiction but because i like to smoke. You have something to do. inhaling and exhaling smoke is fun and it looks funky.

Re: quittin...
This. I was surprised to see you asking for advice after the 3rd day, you've gone 3 days, well done, keep it up, tho the more you talk about it the more you're gonna keep thinking about it... shameful comparison, but when I broke up with my ex I had to get rid of everything she'd got me, everything that reminded me of her as everytime I thought about her, feelings came back, this combined with weighing up the pros and cons of her helped too, obviously exaggerating the cons and forgettin about the pros...Firkles wrote:I Wouldn't start threads about quitting because it only makes you think about it more, best to keep schtum

Dark angel, fall from the heavens above, send me an angel to heal my heart from being in love... After all of the love for you, in my life, but it wasn’t good enough for you, I can’t take no more tears from my eyes.... But it wasn’t good enough for you, I can't take no more hurt from that time....

Just remember that most of the world's tobacco is grown in the U.S.;
the U.S. tobacco lobby is huge, wealthy, and very powerful;
the tobacco lobby's spokesman in Washington DC - until recently - was Jesse Helms;
both Helms and the tobacco lobby have long been known for extreme conservativeness (i.e. racist imperialist bullshit);
Helms - with the support of big tobacco's backers - waged a war on art in the U.S. that wound up eliminating pretty much all government funding for art, or at least the kind that didn't come with strings attached...
...and every time you smoke, you're giving those assholes money directly.
I learned this from seeing Allen Ginsberg speak back in the 90's.
