MC-ing over dope beats, METHODS NYC

Post by abetterlie » Mon Jan 25, 2010 3:18 pm

I generally don't beef with anyone's styles or music, but this guy who MC'd for 16 bit on Friday at coco66 was straight terrible, and completely unnecessary.

I don't understand the point of MC-ing over interesting dubstep. Why do dj's want to have these idiots screaming repetitive crap all over their tracks? Can anyone answer that?

Anyone who was at Glade last year probably remembers that moron on stage for benga's set who kept screaming "WHERE MY BUNNY RABBIT MASSIVE AT, YEEAAAAH KEEP HOPPIN'" and "WAY TOO DRUNK!!!" for the whole fucking set. It absolutely ruined it.

Don't believe me? Download the FWD+RINSE_NOV09_SKREAM+BENGA mix (https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php? ... c0pMWEE9PQ) and tell me that it doesn't take every ounce restraint in your body to keep the murderous rage from bubbling over and choking this guy to death. :u:

I realize this will get read as flamebait, but I really want to know, wtf is the point of having an MC? Especially if you're making absolutely dope music that on it's own stands tall, like 16bit does.

If mc's were great, they would be on album cuts.

I pesonally hate it and i just dont understand the added musical enjoyment it gives the person listening, at all.

When in the club it creates a hugely dark and negative vibe due to the MC shouting violent and ego filled lyrics over what would useally be positive and upbeat music, and it also means that the dancefloor just becomes a ego based sausage fest with a load of white wannabes acting like theyre the fucking shit.

I dont know whether its just our local scence or what, but our MCs have NO clue about drops, breakdowns, bars and timing, they just shout their ego fuelled rap with stuff involving guns, knifes violence and how big and bad they or there gang is, never giving respect to the soundsystem, DJ or the crowd. They also bring unwanted crowds which turn the night into a place where you constantly have to worry about being mugged or whatever.. where you left your bag etc.

Also as a DJ i find it impossible to concentrate as they even MC OVER VOCALS, i mean c'mon.

When listening to radio DJ's talk shit about big ups or whatever i feel that i completely RUINS the experience.. especially when its at a loud volume. Who wants to hear someone talk shit over a great tune? not me.

By the way i would just like to add that i do not mind MCs rapping over Grime as i know that this music was somewhat made with this in mind, it works for a start and grime MCs also tend to have some rythem, even if they are still talking about their egos.

I just wish that MCs would leave our genre alone and let everyone in the dance focus on enjoying the music, and not have to listen to an individual talk about how great they are.

Rant over, anyone want to share their opinions on MCs?

I completely agree. Most mc'ing is just over the top! I've been to shows where the mc won't stop rapping (or yapping) over the badass beats & bass. After awhile the mc'ing just becomes nonsense.

Don't get wrong, I like variety & sometimes it's necessary for the MC to say a FEW words to hype up the crowd, but mc'ing for an hour straight or more? Come on! Go take a lunch break man, or go hang out with some of your friends Sucka MC! I'm sure you have plenty of them.

Let us come to a compromise, mc for a few minutes so you can have your glory on stage and just exit gracefully whilst the artist/band does their thing. And if you feel the crowd is not acting hyped up enough then go ahead and do your thing for just a FEW more minutes and exit promptly after your business is done.

Sounds like a fair trade off right? That way both parties get their way. People who like mc'ing (or don't mind it) over dubstep get to hear their mc rap for a FEW minutes and those who don't like it get to hear the music they like mixed perfectly without any interruptions from anyone wanting to hog up the spotlight.

it seems like you guys are talking about bad MC's not mc's in general. a good mc SHOULD know about drops, bars, etc, and if the mc comes with a minimilistic approach it can add a lot of flaver to certain tracks (IMO). the mc's ability to decide on good timing etc. is what distinguishes a good mc from a bad one.

I totally see your point. I've been to shows where there were good mc's but the majority of them are just awful. I still prefer mc's to only mc for a few minutes rather than the entire set. I just don't see a point on having a mc (or a lead singer) mc for music that is mostly instrumental. The link someone else provided (above) is a good example of a really bad mc. Dang, that was just hard to listen to.

Mcing over bass music goes back to the dancehall, a dj meant something very different in that world. It's been a part of uk bass culture for a very long time and doesn't always translate well in other countries. Jungle was the first form to really embrace this, not suprising with the influence of jamaican culture in working class london. Naturally it evolved and that evolution has spread around the globe.

Bad mc's are like bad anything, it's subjective but can leave people unsatisfied if they arn't feeling it. You can't please everyone all the time, anyone that knows the formula to doing so please fill me in, it would make xmas a lot easier for me ;)

Aint nothing wrong with a hype man but a lot of the time some of these dudes just spit terrible shit and it gets annoying to the ears. thats just my opinion.
