I made a conscious decision to not have internet at home. I prefer it this way. other than drum sample packs that's all I need.

I run nearly nothing on my comp except Ableton. basically my comp at home is for Ableton, Audition, VLC, Media Monkey.

if anything Fight Night and Sand Andreas distract me. but that's all.

yesterday I downloaded an EQ ...haven't downloaded a plug for a long time, but rather deleting them. I used to be a plug-in fiend

The way I see it, even if you've got good virus / malware protection, using the internet is pretty much almost always the #1 culprit in slowing computers down. I've actually got THREE computers at this point; the new laptop I bought last summer, which isn't connected and only for producing; a 6-year old laptop that I don't connect and use only for live PAs; and a 9-year old laptop I used for school until we got free computers here. I wish I didn't need all of these, but I hate reformatting and reinstalling stuff, especially when it comes to plugins.

Just how I prefer it, not saying you couldn't do both fine.
this

edit flor clarity - no lan/wlan etc, no windows update, no av/spyware/malware progs, basically nothing running in background, boots up super quick, im not forever dling new plugs/samples etc, work with what ive got and dont get distracted.

used to have internet and i was forever trying a new eq or updating or whatever...

I have Native Instruments Komplete and using NI Service Center is essential and much easier when you have an online computer because it just asks you if you want to update a product like massive for example.

There is an offline option if you don't want your production computer to be net connected and although I have never used it I hear it is rather tedious. Basically you would install Service Center on your home/pr0nz computer and download the files. You then put the files on a USB drive/flash card and transfer them to your production comp.

I dunno it's just easier being connected to the net for updates, samples, advice etc...

However there are times when I would like to keep my production and play computers separate just for the fact that I could have the production comp be bare bones other than music software thus freeing up a lot of CPU. I am just too lazy and don't really have the money to buy another decent computer.

I agree to an extent, and used to be like this, but now am the opposite - unless I have a significant issue, i dont worry about the latest version, so long as what ive got works. Bit of a pita at first when you have to do all the challenge response via a ubs stick but no biggy.

In fact, the latest reaktor just wont work and ive gone back to the version on the dvd. Im also sure th older battery worked better, the visuals are so slow (which pads get hit) are almost a beat out... :? prob going to go back to the dvd versions. However, massive latest version is better. But i knew about the improvements (syncable lfos) so went an dled it from my NI account, simple.

Each to their own however.

is it a good or bad thing to use internet on a computer you use to make music?
I use one computer for everything. It is doable if you know what you are doing. I download warez non stop but I know where to get them from so I get no virus's.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.
