MAKING A MIX

Post by DubSac » Fri Feb 05, 2010 11:48 pm

Two questions....are they any half decent free programs out there that you could use to make a mix? i just needa be able to like fade tracks into each other....my second question, are you able to make mixes in Fruity Loops? like can you bring in finished mp3 files and mix them together? thanks guys.

couldnt really find this in the mixing section. cheers!

i mean the easy way would be to pre pitch all the mp3s etc then just set it up as audio lanes in fl and automate the vol and eq levels
don't remember if fl has a tempo track on it but that would be another option
or just find a bud with some cdj or decks

determine the bpm then pitch them to a common tempo like you would with a turntable etc
setup 2 audio channels in fl to arrange the tracks on you want to mix and toss 3 band eqs on each one and automate to taste with volume faders and eq knobs

DAW mixing is uber lame...

So is mixxx, you cant use that shit for anything real, dont try n lie to yourself...

Why are you doing this? Please dont try n impersonate DJs... N if its like a production promo or whatever, you can usually find skilled djs who will throw you something togther without much questions... :t:

I mean, you can do it like deadly said, n lay audio into FL... but thats LAME!!!

why? that's what's done on the majority of commercial cds or just multiple takes layered over each other to seem flawless

Because in my mind, the whole POINT of the dj is the medium betwen producer and live performance. Making mixes this way requires none of the inherit natural skill that REAL djs have...

I despise that behavious, this 'Studio Mix' cover up for jukebox sessions...

I see too many DJs get booked based off of skill judgements made on these sort of terms, cause lets face it, noones coming right out n saying 'I prepared this 'mix' over a 3 week period using Fruity Loops.' ... I prepare all my mixes over the period of time the recorders on. I beat match the good ole fashioned way, live, by hand, requeing or turning back in the headphones. I determine my drop points off my own knowledge of structural theory, not off some waveform view of a tracks future. And when I go to shows n se these people that obviously got booked on a 'Studio Mix', and are wreckin every other song, I cant help but get a little annoyed. Especially knowing that off hand, I couldnt tell you the last time I trainwrecked, especially on simple 140 dub, which, alot of these studio mix cheaters cant even match, despite it being the same genre n bpm.

N I say studio mix in the new sense of it, long extended DAW project mixes... I know some guys who still have studios, n still call the use of multiple players, drums machines, and synths in thier live mixes 'Studio'... Unfortunately though, these DAW DJs can recreate the effects of the most genious of DJs on the fly craft with a few weeks of work on a project.

And I can see how this can benefit a producer or someone who wants thier original stuff in cohesion of a mix, but is not a DJ themselves. This is fine. Dont use it as a grounds to get booked, dont start thinking your some badass DJ n gettin cocked, cause if thats what your doing, DAW mixin, I dont regard it as DJing.

Like I said though, I guess for producers to use it when they dont have DJ peeps too help them, its cool, good luck.

Yeah, VDJs fine dude, when did I ever knock on it???

If your actually droppin n mixing, then you dont at all fall into my little rant up thier...

Its DAW playlist people Im on about... I learned too mix on mp3 though, still use CDJs no cause they feel the same only tangible, so I cant knock on that... I can say that unless your on a TCV system or have a controller or something, that shits fuckin HARD to match anything thats not standard tempo with though.

I'm kind of with Basic A...

I guess it depends what you are using it for, but to my mind if you want tracks mixed properly, learn to DJ, or get someone who knows how to do it.

reasons are two fold, firstly if you are using it for anything other than listening to yourself, it's kind of a lie (the fact commercial mixes are done this way doesn't negate this). Secondly, and most importantly, just slinging tunes together and fading them together isn't going to get you a good mix. The beauty and fun of mixes and mixing is the creativity involved when selecting, mixing, cutting and scratching tracks, and you will never be able to replicate this using the means you are intending to use.

I'm not being elitist or anything before anyone pipes up, I just think it's a disservice to music to mix this way... Saying that as a DJ of 13 years I do have fairly strong views on the subject!

Haha.

If your lookin to get your originals dropped together though producers of DSF, Ill always mix for ya. takes however long an aim transfer back n forth + playin the set would take.

Stick that in your 3 week fl mixtape n smoke it.

i'm used to this BS now, Basic A gets his panties all in a bunch every time someone mentions mixing without vinyl.

just wondering, what his advice would be if you're a producer, and nobody knows who you are and none of your stuff is released on vinyl?? what are you supposed to do, mix other people's tracks? what a cop out. i'd rather mix my own stuff in live then mix ANYBODY's else ish on vinyl.

it depends on whether you're mixing live or not.

mixing live i recommend virtual dj 'cause it's SO SIMPLE and the gui is nice. If you're not definitely go with fruity loops or even an ableton demo
