Talking / Vocoded bass technique?

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on creating the vocoded or 'talking' style bass sound found in loads of tunes.

Read up on FM synthesis and Formant filters

Automate filter cuttoff - 30hz -> 400hz -> 30hz (roughly, i cba checking, just experiment with values) This creates a wow sound once you add......
Bump up the resonator
Chuck a load of decimator or bitcrusher on top.
Serve with some eq'ing, compression and some reverb on the side.
Usually sounds best if you use FM synthesis as gnome mentioned - I personally never use formant filters cause I dont like the sound they create (simple as).
Serves many.

Thanks guys! Seems like Formant was the sound I was after.

Do you know any decent premium formant filters? The ones in Logic don't seem to have the desired effect. Or any well-known ones?

Sugar Bytes WOW filter has vowel settings for what you want to achieve.

haha, before i got into producing dubstep, i got some decent results reproducing the basslines with my guitar and wah pedal

at least i thought they were decent then
