Live and Reaper are completely different, both aimed at slightly different user groups.

Live excels at making quick remixes on the fly with preprepared material and other peoples songs. Reaper is more like a cross between audio editor and VSTi host...

My friend swore by Live for years until I introduced him to Reaper.

Because he swore by Live for years, I dug out an old Live Lite licence recently and have been getting into Live ever since!

Basically, Lives Arrange page is horrible, but live DJing in Reaper isn't really great either.

Hello, welcome to DSF!

Reaper as provided in this pack is the unlicenced 'evaluation' version. There is absolutely no difference between the fully licenced and the unlicenced versions. Reaper is offered as an 'unlimited demo' by Cockos on the assumption that eventually, users of the evaluation version will buy it. In other words, even though you get a nag screen, it is still the full, unlimited version of Reaper whether you buy it or not.

This pack could be used to make a whole album. (Not that you would, but everything you need to do so is provided including synths, samplers and effects)

Reaper can perform many of the functions of an audio editor, although it is not an audio editor. Audacity (which is provided in the pack) is a dedicated audio editor if you need one. Setting up Reapers toolbars to show the functions of an audio editor takes a bit of time, but if you persist, you wont actually ever need an audio editor again! (See the Reaper thread for ideas on making Reaper closer to an audio editor ---> http://www.dubstepforum.com/post1207901.html#p1207901 )

You may wish to download the latest version of Reaper from the Cockos website, and the latest version of Audacity from the audacity website?

I use certain payware plugs as well (like CamelPhat and Surge).

What I really meant by my comment was, 'Why would you restrict yourself to freeware to make an album when there are so many great payware plugins out there?'.

Still, it would make a good marketing gimmick!

I got a great sampler, UVI workstation. Its the engine behind MOTU's Mach5 and its free and damn incredible. You're not limited to using UVI's samples either. It has multi outs (17 stereo), almost all controls can be assigned and a decent interface (beauty matters). You can also do layers, I think crossfades between layers, I could be wrong, and they even have a 64 bit version. It's a purely personal prference buddy.

I haven't used it for ages now though, so I must admit I can't recall the reason fully. Something about it feeling 'clunky' and 'blocky', like it was limited and rather vanilla. (Coming from Reason 3 though, that is saying something hehe)

Na, check out Logic, Cubase, Reaper et al, then try Live. You will probably pick up on the differences immediately.

I know nothing of Linux.

Even for Windows operating systems, this pack took a while to research and compile.

With your knowledge of Linux, perhaps you can compile an equivalent Linux version to be listed in this thread?
