programming punk/rock/metal drums?

Post by mooseforyebs » Mon Feb 08, 2010 4:07 pm

i do drums for mah band and seeing as i dont drum im wondering what the best way to program punk/rock type drums is. looking for good samples, kits, reverb tips, etc. while i can make the patterns and fills quite easily the sound is what im having trouble with. i often find the drums sounding too "hitty" or synthetic if ya get me. im pretty much trying to simulate the feel of a live drummer through a computer, any help would be much appreciated.

These samples are pretty good:

I tend to send the signal from my drum bus to a new bus with some sort of guitar amp simulator with distortion turned up and a bit spring reverb, then mix this muddy signal in with the original. It makes the sound a little less clinical.

Turn quanitization off n put some very subtle dicrepncies on your carrier rhythm, i.e. kick/snare or whatever... Like said above, muddle with effects for a more organic feel... If you get a very light rimshot sample n put it on the occasional hit, youll get some good effect turning the velos up n down, itll make it feel like someone hit the edge of a drum... Adjust the the tail of symbols so they sound like the same symbol but with different decays, then adjust velos from their...

On a note though, thats all for punk and the organic feeling mostly...

I used ot be in an EBM project a while back, n if thats the vibe you want, focus on industro sounds n hard quantized kick rolls/recurring triplets. look up 'This Shit will Fuck You Up' by combichrist for the ideal example of EBM drumming...

Try Addictive Drums or something... gives you a pretty decent "live" sound.

Also layer some breakbeats underneath, that always helps.

i love using the free gscw drum samples. they come pre-compressed and mix ready. sfz mappings are also available:

when it comes to programming the actual beats, my method is to record them 'live' using my midi keyboard. it gives the basic human feel such as proper swing, varying velocities and such. once the midi sequence is recorded, i dig in that piano roll and tweak stuff using the mouse.
