pitch your tunes up to 980bpm to get some decent gabber - listen to it and you will get very very soon in the mood for 140-bass-music - then pitch back to 140 and go on with production

I totally say go for it. Not every moment needs to be the realization of your life's ambition. Who knows where such an investigation will take you? Maybe u actually do like boys!

But fucking hell, it is a shame your statement, if I'm not making dubstep, it's either x, y or z. I know this is a generational thing, but fuck that. You fucking kids with your classification of everything from your own identity to art and everything else. Everything in discreet boxes. This shit drives us old timers absofuckinglutely crazy.

I don't really write dubstep at all, i love listeneing to the atmosphere it creates which is something we're trying to utilise in our freeform productions.. Freeform is similar to production style as trance but at 170 - 180 bpm (generally). Also anything goes with freeform, so it you want a heavy dub section then go for it. if you fancy listening to some examples nuenergycollective.com and finrg.com are the two big freeform labels with loads of mixes on their sites =)

For me Trance is the epitome of commercial dance music and pretty much devoid of any innovation or feeling... but thats me. It was good in the mid 90s for a bit...

I would say its good that you want to take a break from dubstep, but like others have said, why just paint yourself into another corner? Instead of picking another genre and using that as a jumping off point, pick another element of making a tune and use that as a new starting point. Use a new BPM or a give yourself a time limit to make the tune in, limit the number of tracks you use or the instruments you use, ie next time you sit down to make a tune, say Im gonna make a tune at 110, with only 8 tracks in 3 hours. That way you're limiting the method to spur creativity, but not limiting the creativity by trying to make the tune fit into a specific genre's box.

I was in a huge rut, then found a project that was similar to what I was saying about the limits and it has started a creative run thats been working for me for months now...

I love trying different genres when in a rut. Made a bit of 2-step last month, and this month been bang on the half step dnb. If music isn't coming naturally when I start a tune, I'll just go in another direction until things aren't forced.

wow, genre-labeling is really boxing folks in. just because a tune has hard kicks and off-beat basses, does that make it trance? yikes.

make music regardless of tempo or style. make dubstep at 130bpm with no LFO action. Benga's got some 140biz that sounds like trance.

a classic technique to get out of a rut is to rip off another piece of music. spend a week and try to write like silkie, mala, rusko, skream, kode, joker-- try on all those hats.

then again i can't stand trance for the life of me, so i'm going to desperately plead that you make ANYTHING other than trance. make shitty US commercial hiphop, even- just don't make trance.

I never listened to the podcasts until 4 days ago. Put them on a repeat playlist while laying in bed...the dreams I had were crazy yo.

tech house is ill though

random example

an interesting thing you should try doing, is chop a sample...chop maybe 2 samples. and try to make 10 tunes out of those 2 samples.

shiny? definetly....but that's not to say there isn't any interesting and creative music being made within the mainstream if you know where to look. i mean i could just as well say theres equally generic and uninteresting dubstep being made with overly shiny production that borders on technical wankery, but we all know thats only a part of the picture.
