They hear something that is interesting (this basically includes a lot of urban music and dance music) they then find some approachable tracks and play them on radio programs around 8pm (high time) and place prominent reviews in magazines (NME). This causes a small number of people to become increasingly interested and then begin creating that music (or what they now as that music) themselves. This causes a sound to be produced which isn't necessarily how it began but what the media has perceived the sound to be. The same happened with D'n'B, hiphop, and 'Grime', although they have removed that genre so far from the original genre it's completely unrecognisable.
Essentially it makes people feel 'cool' and unique because they listen to genre of music which is new (or so they are told). The original music is fairly unapproachable so this replacement makes it more approachable and as a result, it's overall sound changes.
this is a pretty good explanation of what has happened in my area of the last 2-3 years... its really frustrating if you aren't interested in aggro or tear-out...

no, no, no no....he's chatting like a jackass.

and please, for the love of god, dont you start pushing jump-up dubstep in raleigh... the only thing worse than trying to explain dubstep to people is when they think they know what it is. for instance, everyone in WNC thinks its all wobble-bangers and rusko remixes, and in the piedmont everyone associates it with the skeezy fucks and meth-heads left over from the breakbeat/DNB scene.

I'm chatting like a jackass?

The first big wave of dubstep fans had to do with people in the electronic scene hearing about a new genre of music and becoming interested and fascinated with a new evolution in music.

This current, massive, second wind of dubstep has more to do with people following the hype. Dubstep is a now a lifestyle accessory.... a fashion statement.... the hip place to be... and young oblivious types are simply following the pussy. I may have added a slight bit of humor to it, and you may think I'm chatting like a jackass, but I'm telling it like it is.

Sorry If I'm not taking our scene as serious as you'd like. I'll wear a suit and tie to my next gig.

you're clearly thinking of electro. why don't you become an electro dj? a slew of disposable flavor-of-the-month tunes would be the perfect soundtrack to drinking pbr with the other dime-a-dozen hipsters.

You seem to be in a bit of denial.

Have you experienced much dubstep outside of north carolina? Are you going to go to WMC? Being totally serious here. There is a nice chunk of dubstep fans who are showing up at shows because their favorite EDM magazine talked about dubstep... or they heard bassnectar at a rave and are suddenly dubsteps biggest fan... or their favorite blogger talked about the newest Joker remix.

Sorry if this is bad news to you... or if it makes you feel like the bandwagon may be getting full... but dubstep (in most large metro areas) has touched on the mainstream and the scope of dubsteps influence has changed noticeably over the past year.

no, i've seen the hype (all of the media outlets you are discussing exist here as well), but this troubles me for various reasons including those discussed above by steshine. media exposure could have been good for dubstep but instead we ended up with the scenario you have described.

ideally you, as someone more interested in girls and money than music, would have just jumped on electro instead.

Actually because of the over-hyped nature of Dubstep in Portland and the Northwest, many people are already "over it". This is mostly because the shit they've heard, and the shit that is most commonly played, is largely bland jump-up/midrange wobble rage sauce.

To be honest, if that was my only exposure to dubstep, I'd be over it too. Good thing there's a diverse and plentiful bunch of DJ's here who appreciate some substance! No offense to anyone making them heavy chainsaw tunes (I enjoy a good thrashing too.)

i thought the 2006 kids were the second wave of dubstep fans? wouldn't call dubstep "popular" at all, at least not with people in my part of the world

also to pompende: i don't think pkay was serious about profit at the end there, i thought it was a south park reference to the underwear gnomes? iestep one: steal underwear, step two ???, step three: profit... i loled.

on a side note: wtf happened to electro? what electro sounds like now has nothing to do with what i think electro is

How, from what I posted, did you get that I, personally, am more interested in girls and money than music?

This thread posed the question "why is dubstep becoming so popular so fast?" not "how do you feel about dubstep becoming mainstream?"

I'm a part of a label that prides itself in putting on artists who are pushing boundries and not focusing specifically on what's the flavor of the week. Pretty much the exact opposite of what you're accusing me of.

Need to learn to read before you start running your mouth off about people you don't know

It's a stupid American name hipsters gave to a genre that sounds absolutely nothing like true electro. It's more 'electro house' than 'electro' but the average 18-24 beard stroker stateside thinks anything with a retro synth must be 'electro'.

I think most posters in this thread understood that.... pompende seems to be that overly serious dubstep type who is angry about everything

yeah just to clear up that i did think you were joking (i did not get the south park reference), you got offended that i used the word 'jackass' instead of 'joker' i then mistook what you said to be a validation of scenesters and substance-less hype.

it'll definitely catch on a bit more, but probably even out commercially, kinda like d&b did here in the states... that's okay though, its frickin' funky, thats why i dig it.

yeah....for some reason when im stoned....i think midrange wobbles sound kind of weird. like if i bump it in my car i start to comprehend the actual sounds that im hearing....i figure its just a bunch of noise......like ive always wondered

people think dubstep is "tight"......but what exactly is tight, what goes in to making a bassline filthy????

to be honest i dont like hearing midrange unless im in the dance....when im on my laptop i prefer the lighter side

but i really hate hearing light shit in the dance.......thats why hype dubstep is so popular, because its what you want to hear when your going mad

Dubstep doesn't have any boundaries or limits, you can pretty much do what you want with it. It also blends different genres together you can be into any sort of music and incorparate it into making a Dubstep tunes. It can fit into any mood your feeling, you can chill with it or have a little bop to it. And of course its main trait being extremely heavy bass riffs. Its just a unique genre.

Maybe its gone popular so fast because its just a really really good music style?
